Sens take a quick lead over sleeping Bears

14:17: Shane Hnidy, in the lineup with Steve Montador as a late scratch, has been pretty ornery so far in this one, and just slammed a Sens skater in the near boards. It might be one of the loudest hits/collisions into the boards I’ve ever heard hear at the Garden.’
7:07: Good jump by the David Krejci/Milan Lucic/Michael Ryder line with Ryder already squeezing off a few shots, and Dennis Wideman narrowly missing on the shot otisde of the faceoff circle following a quick rush by the trio.
5:30: Great spin-o-rama pass by Zdeno Chara from the left faceoff circle following a pad save on Blake Wheeler from his knees at the right dot. Z dropped it right back to Wheeler cruising in front of the net, but big Alex Auld was able to get a body in front of the puck and smother the rebound.
4:43: Good backhand bid by Byron Birz after using his big body to carry the puck toward the net. He released the flip in traffic, but Auld was able to get a piece of his body on it. Bitz has looked strong on the pick early in this game. It’ll be interesting to see if the B’s braintrust opts for Bitz’s big body in playoff situations given their relative lack of size up front.
2:21: Hooking penalty by Savard after a little stickwork when he was behind the play. B’s have been pretty undisciplined during this first period against the Senators, and aren’t outworking the ready-to-golf Sens.
00:51: Mike Fisher, Dany Heatley and Chris Campoli were swarming the Bruins net during the PP, but Thomas was hot-footing it around the crease blocking everything. He’s been solid in the first other than the Alfredsson shot.
The Senators have a 1-0 lead over the Bruins after one full period of play.
