Bruins announce Thomas contract, Saturday press conference

The Boston Bruins officially announced the signing of Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas to a multi-year contract this afternoon, and both Thomas and Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli will hold a 10 a.m. press conference at the TD Banknorth Garden prior to the Bruins/Rangers afternoon game.

Multiple hockey sources confirmed that the deal is at least three years in length, and will pay the 35-year-old an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $5 million. The Boston Globe reported on Friday that it’s a four-year contract worth a total of $20 million for Thomas. The two-time All-Star goalie is currently the league leader in both Goals Against Average (2.11) and Save Percentage (.932), and is a favorite for the Vezina Trophy. He established a new career high in wins with 33 and has helped lead the Bruins to their first 50-win season since 1992-93.

Thomas’ first words about the new deal are expected to come on Comcast SportsNet’s Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight as the B’s goalie will be a guest with Mike Felger and Gary Tanguay on the early 6:30 p.m. edition of the Friday show.

    Joe,
    I am so ANGRY!
Leave it to the B’s to go and screw things up for the future.
    What is their business plan?
I also wonder what kind of a message this sends to Rask. The kid wants to play. Now we’re tying up 8 mil. for 2 goalies, one of which will be on the bench? He’s outta here.
I already despise the Jacobs family, but now Chiarelli is working his way into the public enemy #1 spot.

Repeat after me, “Serenity now” Miranda…

I’m not going to call Chiarelli Public Enemy #1 quite yet. I want to see how this all plays out, but giving a 35-year-old goaltender both the money and the length of years that he wanted just seems like bad business to me. Esepcially in an economy where the salary cap — and hence player salaries — will be going down.

This deal is great for Thomas, but not so great for the Bruins.

Rask may have to be patient and he may ultimately have to go elsewhere if he wants to be “The Man: in the next three years.

I’m more concerned about having enough money for Kessel, Krejci, Hunwick, Axelsson next season…Either one of Kessel or Krejci won’t be back or a significant piece to this team will have to be moved.

If I were a Bruins fan I would probably just ignore all of this during the playoffs, and just repress it until the summertime…

Thanks Joe, but watching this group together in the playoffs and knowing they will not be intact as a unit next season is very difficult to repress.
Repressing will put me on a couch somewhere.

    Mismanagement!
They overpaid for Ryder, so the Thomas move probably shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Howdy would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a tough time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S Sorry for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
