Jacobs expected to address Bruins media on Wednesday morning

The Boston Bruins announced on Tuesday afternoon that the B’s father-and-son ownership tandem of Jeremy and Charlie Jacobs will address the media in a Wednesday morning conference call. The Jacobs’ will “discuss the Bruins’ 2008-2009 season and outlook for next year.”

It’s expected that the two main voices in Bruins ownership will also clarify the contract situation concerning B’s GM Peter Chiarelli, who is entering the final year of a four-year deal with Boston. There’s been no indication that an extension announcement concerning Chiarelli is impending, and it’s unclear what — if any — sticking points are holding up a new pact for the Sporting News NHL Executive of the Year.

Protracted contract squabbles with an NHL executive that’s turned the Bruins franchise around in three short years would be an extremely short-sighted move by Bruins ownership, as would allowing Chiarelli to enter the final year of a four-year contract signed back in May, 2006. The guess here is that Chiarelli would have no shortage of suitors next summer should Delaware North allow it to get to that point.

I am hoping that they will work out a deal for PC. I think he’s done a pretty good job and is deserving of an extension. He is working on re-establishing the Bruins’ brand on and off the ice and has made some large strides in that regard. The team seems to have direction and goals that are transparent to the fans and media alike but most importantly, the team on the ice seems to be improving each year. I think how he handles the tight cap, which RFA’s he can bring back, UFAs he can sign, how much cap space he can create by moving a vet and what he gets in return for that vet are going to make for an exciting off season. Perhaps the Jacob’s are going to see how this is handled before attempting to resign?

“you know Smithers, I think I’ll donate $1 million to the children’s orphanage…when pigs fly”

“Will you be donating that $1 million now, sir?

    “I’d rather not”

How about waiting to see if PC can get anything done in the playoffs first? That is what it is all about right? He is going into his 4th year with just one playoff round win. I know JJ & CJ are thrilled with the beer & popcorn sales and the season ticket renewels but why promote a guy early when he hasn’t accomplished anything yet. Give it a year and if the Bruins deliver in the playoffs next season then lock him up.

Rich – though I’m sure Peter can skate – he played for Harvard – he is not on the ice. The guys on the ice win the playoff rounds. :-)

Given the constraints of the salary cap and the history of the Bruins (many players have not forgotten how the team treated its players under Harry $), the youth of many of its best players, it’s doubtful the team could have gotten past the Pens. Chiarelli put together a really good team in a short amount of time. Kessel and Krejci are not Crosby and Malkin – they’re good, very good, but they’re not in that elite class yet.

Chiarelli needs to be locked up now – not hours before his contract expires. He would have ten offers in his mailbox should that happen. DNC would not like to be in a bidding war for someone they could have hired at a reasonable salary earlier.
