David Krejci will be in the Black and Gold for at least another three years for a grand total of $11.25 million

The Boston Bruins have announced that 23-year-old center David Krejci and the team have come to an agreement on a multi-year extension that will pay him $11.25 million on Tuesday afternoon. According to TSN.com, the three-year deal will pay Krejci an average of $3.75 million per year, and pays out $3.5 million, $3.75 million and $4 million over the next three seasons.

Krejci was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1 after enjoying a breakout 73-point season for the Black and Gold and leading the NHL with a +/- of +36 last season. Both Krejci and Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli are scheduled for a Wednesday conference call to discuss the contract, but terms of the deal weren’t immediately disclosed. Krejci was part of an important restricted free agent class along with fellow RFA Phil Kessel, and the young Bruins sniper remains unsigned at this point.

It’s expected that Kessel is going to command/demand more dollars than Krejci after finishing among the top 12 in the NHL in terms of goals scored (36) this season. The $3.75 million that Krejci will average over the next three seasons is likely to be the dirt cellar floor of the Kessel negotiations, and the gifted young sniper — capable of breaking games open with his skating speed and snap shot but also prone to disappearing for long stretches of time, particularly when the going gets rough on the ice — is thought to be looking for something much closer to $5 million a year than $3.75 million per season.

With Matt Hunwick and Byron Bitz still also looking for contracts and roughly $10 million to spend on all four restricted free agents plus any roster upgrades, the chances of Kessel getting his payday in Boston don’t appear to be all that likely. It still appears to be Boston’s best to flip Kessel — or somebody else with a high price tag and good value on the trade market — to another NHL spot for a top 2 defenseman of the puck-moving variety.

Both Krejci and Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli will discuss the deal during a Wednesday conference call at 4:30 p.m. The skillful young center was also originally scheduled to undergo his hip surgery this week as well, so there should be more information about his medical status during the conference call. Check back with the Big Bad Blog for more details in the coming days.

OMG – This made my day!

I can’t wait to get the terms.

    Thanks Haggs.

  • Mike

Someone alert Pete Carroll because this has me completely Pumped and Jacked!

Someone tell J.J. to stop wasting time and lock up Chiarelli now.

No kidding…This is a great deal for the Bruins. $3.75 million cap hit for the next three years for an up-and-coming 23-year-old center that led the NHL in +/- last year. Have a feeling this one was in the works over the last few months rather than something that happened in the last week or two.

It’s way past time for Jeremy Jacobs to take care of Chiarelli.

Yes, Haggs, what is going on with Chiarelli?

  • Miranda

You guys know what this signing means – goodbye Kessel.

  • Brian

All fired up! This is great news for the B’s! Agree with Mike…pumped and jacked! Putting up 70 + points with a torn hip in his 1st full year…look out league!

  • Hockey Joe

I disagree, Miranda…I think this deal actually gives the Bruins a chance to sign Kessel. I dont know if they will because i still dont think that Phil is a Claude Julien type of player but I think they could match any reasonable offer if it came their way

Haggs aka Porkchop is another one of these lemmings impressed with another Northeast Division banner. How about waiting to see if Chiarelli can put together a team that can get it done in the playoffs first? If Chiarelli is building the Ottawa Senators South, a regular season champ and playoff dud then whats the point?

  • http://bigbadblog.weei.com Joe Haggerty

This is a good deal regardless of what the Bruins did or didn’t do in the playoffs, Richie Ketchup. Should Chiarelli not have signed David Krejci to a fair deal because they didn’t get by Carolina in the playoffs? Is this not a good signing?

I think it’s a little early to be calling this team the “Ottawa Senators South”. I thought the Tim Thomas deal was a bad sign by Chiarelli, and didn’t mind saying so. This is a good deal for Chiarelli and the Bruins, and I don’t mind saying so.

This is a great deal for the bruins, only paying out 3.5 million this year gives them the ability to sign kessel without trading away a premium player. If the bruins want to make a legit cup run they should move prospects for a puck moving defenseman not primetime producers. As the playoffs showed us this year, experience counts in a playoff run but can be hidden during the regular season. Signing Krecji means they can move Soderberg (prospect C), and package him with one or two more prospects for a legit good passing defenseman. Keep savard and kessel together, great duo.

  • Dave

I don’t get why Kessel is the piece that needs to move. Why not Kobasew, Ryder, or Ward? It would be stupid to trade a 21 year old goal scorer. Could they get Kessel done for 3 years at 4.25?

  • http://bigbadblog.weei.com Joe Haggerty

So the Bruins are going to get a puck-moving D for a Swedish player that has shown no inclination toward playing in the US and “prospects”? No way…you’ve got to give up to get. Whether it’s Ryder, Kobasew, Savard, Kessel or Bergeron, somebody of value with a price tag would need to be moved to make this happen.

The Blind Swede and prospects aren’t going to get it done for a defenseman that the Bruins could really use. It’s not stupid to trade a 21-year-old goal scorer if you have reservations about A) paying him the money or B) how much he’ll score score when you really need it from him.

    In response to B):

Couldn’t the same concern be applied to Krecji, who disappeared for a couple months towards the end of the season and registed only 3 assists in the Carolina series?

  • Big Zee

Does anyone have any thoughts on who they may offer to get Bouwmeester?

  • How Now Brown Cow

Krejci is one of their main penalty killers, takes faceoffs and plays a lot of minutes as a two-way player for the Bruins. That’s why the Bruins made sure to secure his services. If Kessel ain’t scoring then he’s no good to anybody. That’s the difference between the two players.

dear, haggs.well at least the bruins signed david krejci to a multiyear deal to remain with the bruins for next year i read a piece in today’s boston herald that now boston signed krecji the piece that i read it said that the bruins might trade phil kessel for a high first round draft pick in the upcoming draft and that colorado might be a willing trade partner with marco sturm coming back next year what do you think?

  • Dana Kiecker

So they knew the hip surgery was going down?

  • http://bigbadblog.weei.com Joe Haggerty

Say Hi to everybody in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota for me, Dana…

  • Rich57

Haggs your right the Krejci deal is a very good one and at a very good price, but I fail to see the need to rush and sign Chiarelli when he hasnt gotten anything done in the playoffs. I dont see why you are pushing so hard for it. You do seem like another one of the Bruins fans with the defeatest attitude who is mesmorized by a useless division banner. Wait until he sees if can accomplish something that matters first.

  • Brian

I think the Chiarelli signing should take place as soon as possible. As a fan who has stuck with the Bruins throughout the last 15 years, it is plain to see that Peter has this team going in the right direction. They have a lot of young, raw talent, a solid management/scouting and player development team. This organization does a great job bringing in draft picks and junior players into a rookie camp to get them adjusted to the professional game. They work closely with the young players to get them ready to play in the NHL. Effectively, they are creating what they hope will be a pipeline to the big club. These are all at the direction of the GM. Peter deserves to see this vision through. Look at the facts…this team has improved drastically in each of the last 2 seasons. If the Bruins don’t renew or extend his deal, the Bruins will be starting for scratch again. Peter is also making Boston attractive to free agents. If Boston keeps winning and is a piece or 2 away from getting to the cup finals, a veteran player who wants to win a cup will give Boston a chance. This is becoming a good place to play for NHL players and the team is exciting to watch game in and game out. For all of those reasons, he deserves an extension…IMO.

Krejci is a much, much better player than Kessel, but Kessel is still very young and worth keeping. There is no way I trade that kind of young raw talent and watch it blossom somewhere else. I find it very hard to believe he thinks he should get more than Krejci and I don’t see any reason they can’t get him signed to similar dollars. He may have scored 36 goals, but he is still very inconsistant and not worthy (yet) of a $5M+ per year deal.

I believe they need to get Kessel, Hunwick and Bitz all signed and look for savings elsewhere. Way not see if there is a market for Sturm (1 year left @ $3.9M) or use Savard ($5M) to get a top 4 defenseman. Trading Kessel could really come back to haunt them….just look at Brad Boyes and Kris Versteeg trades…..
