Report: Kessel and top pick offered for Toronto defenseman, seventh pick 06.26.09 at 9:51 am ET
By Joe Haggerty

MONTREAL — According to a report by Bob McKenzie of TSN.ca, B’s GM Peter Chiarelli and their front office cohorts have made their first move of the weekend and offered restricted free agent winger Phil Kessel and their first round pick to Toronto for four-time All-Star defenseman Tomas Kaberle and the seventh pick in the 2009 draft.

According to the report, Leafs GM Brian Burke is “canvassing the league to see if there are any better offers out there”. Kessel scored a team-high 36 goals and 60 overall points in a breakout year for the Bruins, but hasn’t been able to come to an agreement with Boston on a contract for next season and beyond.

Kessel is rumored to have been on the trade market for weeks, and Kessel’s agent, Wade Arnott, didn’t deny any of the Kessel trade rumors in a phone conversation with WEEI.com earlier this week.

Kaberle is a 31-year-old skill defenseman with a palatable cap hit of $4.25 million per season for the next two years, and is widely-considered a puck mover and power play contributor. Kaberle was limited to 57 games with injuries last year, and is certainly not at an all-time high value-wise. Kaberle missed significant time last season with a broken right hand. The 10-year veteran has a no-trade clause in his contract, but there is a window in the clause that permits a trade of Kaberle between the NHL entry draft and Aug.15, a clause activated when the Leafs failed once again to make the playoffs.

UPDATE:  TSN is now amending their report and stating that the Bruins offered Phil Kessel and a future draft pick for Kaberle. Doubtful the Bruins would do this without also getting Toronto’s 2009 first round pick at the No. 7 spot back in return. B’s GM Peter Chiarelli gave a warm, welcoming “no comment” about the rumors when met with the assorted hockey media this morning, and intimated that he first learned of them when he got on his computer this morning. We’ll have more later.

Aint gonna happen Burke would be retarted to make this trade.

Brian Burke badly needs a scorer and some sizzle in Toronto. No 30 goal scorers on that team last year and Kessel is a game breaker. The need is certainly there. Is this a legitimate discussions between the two fishing buddies/GMs, or a rumor designed to smoke out some offers from other teams?

    Now that’s another question entirely…

Kaberle and #7 to Boston for Kessel and #25??? Ill drive Kessel to the airport. Love ya, Phil but we need some blue line help and with Marco coming back healthy and Wheels and Looch another year more mature, I dont think the Bruins miss a beat offensively. Whether Burke makes this deal is another question because theres no guarantee they can sign Kessel anyways, i dont know their cap situation

Toronto is more than $10 million under cap for next season if my math is correct. They need a goal-scorer. They have plenty of money to burn this summer, as does Montreal.

Hockey Joe, that is exactly what the Bruins believe. They think that Sturm returning and guys like Krejci, Wheeler and Lucic improving will soften the blow of losing Kessel if they do trade him. None of those guys can score goals like he can, though.

Tough to find 30-plus goal scorers who are young and can fly. As much as I would love to grab this kind of defenseman I think your giving up to much upside in Kessel. Plus, is the number 7 pick if involved going to pay off this year or is it going to be a work in progress. Kessel is still young and will only improve his whole game in the next coming seasons. Don’t give up on him yet. If they need to shed salary there are other players that would be better to do it with.

Absolutely do this deal if your the Bs. Not so sure if you’re the Leafs. Kessel will end up like Samsanov (thought slightly better). Great speed, quickness and goal scoring tenacity but takes WAY too many shifts off throughout the course of a game and sometimes disappears for a few games at a time. We absolutely need another blue liner that can move the puck especially during power plays. I love Chara but his lack of puck handling abilities definitely negatively impacts the power play 1st team. It’d be great to add someone who can counter that.

    LETS DO THIS!!!

Haggs. You said: “[...]none of those guys can score goals like he (Kessel) can.”
I’m tired of amazing regular season stats being a reference point for a player’s value. We’ve just witnessed first hand: its the ‘playoff season stats’ that matter most. Kessel shows no signs of being the “go-to” guy in an intense playoff atmosphere (as the type of contract he’s looking for defines he should be!) I believe Chiarelli agrees…otherwise he’d keep Kessel no matter what.

Please be true!!! Kessell is a softie!!!

  • sean

Harry are you serious??? Kessel has been the Bruins best scorer in the playoffs for the past two years! Have you even watched this team??

  • Jesse

    Harry,

Kessel is a point per game performer in the playoffs, so that puts your theory right out of the conversation. Not saying that’s enough to toss him $5mill but it’s something they should consider before pulling the trigger.

Honestly i think you can go out and get a Hainsey, Ohlund or a Bieska without even parting with Kessel then swap Kessel + picks for a scorer.

Hey, i know this is a pipe dream but i would do Kessel, 25th, Joe Coulbourne and/or Sobotka for Ilya Kovalchuk and their 2nd rounder. Long shot but worth the call.

  • kev

No no no Keep Kessel, for to long this team has been stagnet on offence, and now u have a 21 year old jet that is steadily gotten better and no one should be blaming his playoff offence had they been better coached and shown more team intesenty in 2nd round!!

  • abden

bad move! kessel is only 21 and scored 36 goals he is only going to get better(we havent seen a goal scorering sniper like him in a bruins sweater in a long time maybe ever).i would trade bergeron before i traded kessel he’s the third best center on the team making first line center money. i would trade him for a bag of pucks just for the cap space

  • bill d

Kessel got much of his scoring last year while recovering from mononucleosis and playing with a shoulder injury. It would have been interesting to see how much more scoring he could have produced had he been healthy. Kaberle and a #7 pick for Kessel should be enough. I’d really like Kessel for Colorado’s #3 overall pick instead.

Bad move. Trading Kessel not good and we will get a 31 year old defencemen who is soft and get hurt alot. Gm cherali you make this move you are an idiot. If you wanna move this guy, move him to Western Conference not in the same division. Get a solid free agent via Free Agency Like ohland. I would not Trade Kessel he is the guy we sould built around. Don’t trade him.
