Sharks free up cap space for Phil Kessel? 08.28.09 at 3:36 pm ET

The San Jose Sharks have freed up $4.6 million in salary cap space, and could be on the hunt for a young sniper

Interesting roster movements made on Friday afternoon by the San Jose Sharks, who have been rumored to be in the Dany Heatley derby this summer while looking to peddle Patrick Marleau after another underachieving postseason. Sharks GM Ron Wilson dealt away a pair of middle-class hockey players to the Vancouver Canucks for two young skaters, and freed up roughly $4.65 million in salary cap space for the upcoming season in the process.

Defenseman/power play specialist Christian Ehrhoff has two years left on his contract at $3.1 million per year and forward Brad Lukowich has a $1.567 million cap hit in his final season before unrestricted free agency, and the two players San Jose got in return (University of Minnesota forward Patrick White and AHL player Daniel Rahimi) aren’t expected to be big role players for the upcoming season.

So the Sharks freed up $4.667 in salary cap space while heading into the last few weeks of the off-season, and require at least two more forward spots to round up their NHL roster among the top 12-forwards for next season. It doesn’t take a noted puckologist to assume that Dany Heatley and Phil Kessel are two of the best skill forwards still hanging out there in hockey limbo, and the Sharks have been rumored to be in the Kessel run at several different points over the last few months.

“This trade speaks to the confidence we have in the young players coming up through our system who have earned the right to compete for a spot on this team,” said Sharks GM Doug Wilson in discussing the deal. “It also creates some flexibility in our team payroll for potential future transactions as the season progresses and adds two more talented players to our reserve list that can help this organization in the future.”

The $4.667 million in payroll flexibility also fits in roughly with what Kessel was expected to be looking for in a multi-year deal this summer while rehabbing right shoulder surgery. That figure is far from the $5 million per year Jeff Carter-type money that some assumed Kessel and agent Wade Arnott were chasing after, and is pretty close to what Kessel comparables like David Booth and Alexander Semin are currently making in terms of player salary.

The 21-year-old sniper is expected to miss all of October while recovering fully from the rotator cuff/labrum surgery, and will be hard-pressed to match his 36-goal output from last season given the injury situation. During his recent participation in the Team USA Orientation Camp, Kessel indicated that he’d like something in the neighborhood of a three-year deal and expected that his deal would be done by the beginning of the NHL season on Oct. 1. Adding to the intrigue is that Kessel’s name doesn’t appear on a quick afternoon perusal of the team’s roster on www.bostonbruins.com, though that doesn’t mean anything definitively (Kessel was added back to the online roster by the early morning hours of Saturday).

Arnott told WEEI.com in an interview earlier this summer that Kessel was willing to be “creative” in terms of contract discussions, and that his client had directed him to get a deal done with the Bruins before entertaining offers from other teams.

The $4.65 million is probably right around where Kessel expected his payday to be at the beginning of this summer, as his numbers and service time are pretty much right in lock-step with Florida Panthers forwar David Booth. Booth signed a six-year, $25.5 million contract this summer amid the current hockey economy that’s going to pay him $4.25 million annually for the next six seasons.

The chances of Kessel getting awarded that kind of salary from the Bruins are “slim and none” as long as fellow teams avoid the option of signing the talented young restricted free agent to an offer sheet — but perhaps that’s about to change with the Sharks payroll shed on Friday afternoon. Wilson told reporters that the money was freed up to make moves ”as the season progresses”, but it remains to be seen whether that means a new home for Kessel riding shotgun with Jumbo Joe Thornton.

Yeah. Phil kessel is definetely heading to the sharks. This move by DOUG Wilson seems a little weird, but in the end it should work out for the sharks (Ron Wilson is the head coach of the leafs and was fired by Doug last year).

  • Eddie

This is Doug Wilson your talking about, Wilson doesn’t go after players like Kessel or Heatley, he goes after players who either don’t want to play in SJ (Campbell, Moen, Guerin), or players who are your 26th or 27th best prospects. I guarantee you this if Wilson makes a trade with Boston, I guarantee Bruins fans will be happy in the end, because Wilson will get fleeced like he always does in trades.

  • Joe

I don’t think Wilson has been fleeced in the past. He often gets good deals from other teams like the deal for Joe Thornton where the bruins didn’t even get Patrick marleau in return. Or how about acquiring Dan Boyle ( one of the best offensive defenseman in the league ) from the lightning. Neither of those players are 26th or 27th prospects and both seem
to like San Jose prety well.

  • Arturs

Are all Sharks fans as dumb as Eddie, or is he just a pathetic, lonely exception?

  • http://bigbadblog.weei.com Joe Haggerty

Yes, Ryan…thanks for that. I continually get Doug and Ron mixed up long after Brian Burke has broken them apart. Thanks for catching that. I’d blame dyslexia if I had it, but I sadly I can’t

    Irbe… is that you?

Sharks needed to clear some cap space. They still have two RFAs to re-sign (after this deal, they’re about 1.6m under the cap with 23 man roster). With Kessel out until November or later, I don’t think the Sharks would pick him up now. But it gives them the flexibility prior to the trade deadline to do something.

  • Matt

Umm, Hagerty, you might want to quickly peruse that roster on http://www.bostonbruins.com one more time, buddy…

Phil Kessel’s name is definitely PRESENT on the roster – he’s the 6th name from the top.

What would San Jose be sending Boston in return? The Bruins have a TON of quality youth coming up through the system, Chiarelli already said that they have 6 + 1 primary d-men locked in (Chara, Wideman, Morris, Stuart, Ference, Hunwick + the winner of the AHL’s top defenceman award, Johnny Boychuk – who’s signed a 1 year, 1 way contract), they have Timmy Thomas, and Rask as their goaltenders even Sabourin as a third stringer… I don’t know what the Sharks really have to offer the Bruins.

Boston needs a volume sniper, and I just don’t see them letting Kessel walk. 21 years old, 36 goals despite missing over 10 games, buckets of potential and good chemistry with his teammates, tough kid who has already battled cancer and plays hurt… It’s pretty freaking hard to replace that combination of scoring and speed… and even more difficult to get a proper return on Kessel, given the youth situation and Boston’s close proximity to the cap.

I hope that SJ does sign Kes to an offer sheet, so this will all be over – Chiarelli has already stated that he’ll basically match any sane offer…

Kessel wasn’t on the roster earlier today, Matt…I checked it myself. He may have subsequently been added back as a result of a computer error, but there was a lengthy period of time where he wasn’t listed on there. Didn’t say it meant anything at all…It’s not a big deal. Just thought it was funny.

As for who the Bruins would get in exchange, I could see a scenario where they bring in a scorer like Cheechoo for a cost-controlled cap hit of $3 million a year rather than the roughly $4.5 million per that Kessel is seeking on a multi-year deal. I’m sure it would involve another talented youngster — of which the Sharks have many — coming Boston’s way, but it’s not out of the realm.

If Kessel was viewed as that good in the eyes of the Bruins decision-makers, then they would pay him the money his peers are making around him given his age and skill set. The fact that he’s still out there hanging in the breeze, and has already said he’s demanding less than $5 million a year should tell you how the Bruins feel about him. Actions speak louder than words.

Also, please spare me the Johnny Boychuk AHL defenseman of the year stuff…he’s a fringe NHL player that would be replaced in a second if the Bruins could bring in a better young defenseman at the same price.

I do agree that an offer sheet would end all of this very quickly…but I don’t that coming from Doug Wilson.

Johnathan Cheechoo? For 3 million bucks per season? Cheech doesn’t exactly have great value right now (he of 12 goals last year, and declining stats in successive seasons – even if he’s been banged up a bit), and Boston would still have to move someone to find the cash to add Cheechoo under the cap. Not to mention that one of the reasons why Kessel is viewed as expendable, is because of his position. Boston has plenty of RW’s. I can’t see them breaking up the teams chemistry simply to add Cheechoo. I mean, Chuckie Kobasew (very solid player), who I always thought looked like one of the guys who would get moved to secure Kessel, scored almost twice as many goals as Cheechoo last year, and he’s a way better 2 way player.

I don’t think Boston has any doubts about Kessel’s level of skill, or potential impact. I think they’re looking at other young guys like Lucic, and Wheeler (plus Savard, and to a lesser extent, Morris – if he turns it around -Ference and Stuart)… guys who will be due for new contracts after this season. They just want to keep Kessel’s cap hit manageable, because it will give those other guys more leverage in their deals – especially Lucic and Wheeler, if they continue to improve the way they did last year. Krejci signed a very nice deal for Boston, and I think Chiarelli is trying to work off of that when scaling the contracts for those youngsters.

As for Boychuk, sure he hasn’t cracked the NHL yet, but he did score 65 points in 78 games last year in the AHL – and did win the award. That’s pretty impressive, no matter how you slice it, and he’s on a 1 way deal. It’s not as though defenseman don’t occasionally develop a little late – and he’s only 25 – so I’ll definitely wait and hopefully watch him play in the big show, before passing judgement on his future.

With the Sharks moving 2 dmen yesterday to VanCity (my home), I can’t see the Sharks trading another Dman. Not to mention that Boston isn’t looking for another top 6 dman. If you look at the structure of their defensemen, Chara, Wideman, Hunwick, and Morris are keepers right now, while Stuart and Ference (who are very solid depth guys) make less than 2M each – Boston needs to re-sign those two guys next year, for their leadership, sound defensive play, and their relatively cheap deals – to maintain flexibility for future cap scenarios. There’s no room in Beantown for a Sharks Dman, and San Jose doesn’t have one to give up now, anyway.

I wont be shocked if Kessel gets moved, but I would be surprised if he goes to San Jose. Doesn’t a deal between the Sharks and the Sens make more sense? Heatley and Marleau involved as the primaries? Ottawa needs a significant return, and I’m not sure where they’ll be able to find it. I always thought we’d see Ehrhoff and Marleau heading to the Sens, but that can’t happen now that Ehrhoff is a Canuck. Ottawa needs a puck moving defenseman badly…

Reports out of Montreal are that Francis Boullion is close to signing with the Bruins.

  • John Miatech

Sharks are not going to trade Marleau. I agree that Boston doesn’t want or need Cheech, but maybe Cheech turns it around this year. I think Wilson is just making some room for down the road. After all, he’s cleared all the dead weight that he can from the team now, and he has gotten rid of the right guys. Cheech has gotten the message loud and clear that more of him is expected if he wants to stay a Shark.
