NESN analyst Mike Milbury was a guest of the Dale & Holley show Tuesday morning to talk about the Bruins and the Marc Savard controversy (listen to the interview here). Asked whether Penguins forward Matt Cooke should be suspended for his hit to the head that gave Savard a concussion, Milbury said he need to take another look at the play, but: “Given the rules of the game today, I don’t think it’s a suspendable offense.”

Milbury offered an explanation and defense for Cooke. Said Milbury: “The word predatory does come to mind. And you know, I don’t have any trouble with that. When you’re playing hockey, you’re supposed to finish your checks. I don’t think he meant to give him a Grade 2 concussion. That’s Matt Cooke’s game. He’s supposed to be a guy that finishes his checks, that agitates a little bit, that can play a little bit of hockey. He’s not a slug, But he’s no Sidney Crosby. His job is to make sure he punishes people when he gets the opportunity. Intent to injure? I don’t know. That’s a hard one to pin on anybody. Certainly, ready to finish his check with authority.”

Milbury said the Bruins’ lack of a response after the check was disheartening. “Your best offensive player goes down with a resounding check — borderline check under any circumstances, maybe cheap, maybe intentional. It requires a direct response immediately,” he said, adding. “I blame the players who were on the ice at that time. You have to take accountability for the guys who are on the ice. … The guys that are there have to recognize that there’s been a code violation, if you will. … They should have gone right after the perpetrator or even gone after anyone else that was on the ice to rattle the cage. You can’t be taken advantage of that way. The players on the ice have to look in the mirror after this is over and say, ‘Dammit, we should have done something. We should have done it right away.’ And the coach has to back them up on that.”

However, Milbury cautioned about overreacting. “I think we got caught up here in Grapes [Don Cherry] mania. Like, you’ve got to die in order to satisfy the blood lust in the stands,” he said. “That’s not my schtick.” The former B’s coach said he was disgusted to hear people saying the Bruins should have attempted to cause a serious injury to Pittsburgh’s star players in retaliation. “That’s just ridiculous,” he said. “Are we that demented? Is that the way we have to approach this sport? I don’t think so.” Added Milbury: “To say that because your best player went down you have to immediately turn around and go after vigilante justice is Neanderthal. We’ve got to get past that.”

Added Milbury: “I think they should have had a quick and immediate response, especially to go after Cooke and then continue to play the damn game with the kind of authority that they should have gone into the game playing with. That’s my point. But to think we have to go back to, ‘They hurt one of our best players, so now we’re going to go take out Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby by giving them cheap shots in the back of the head,’ that’s Philadelphia Flyers hockey in the ’70s. We’re past that. We should be past that, and if we ever revert to that, it’s the day I stop watching the damn game. Because that isn’t right. It’s just not right.”

Asked whether captain Zdeno Chara needs to be more of a physical presence for the Bruins, Milbury said: “Because he’s 6-foot-8, we’re asking him to be 30 minutes a game, fight, physical — we’re asking a lot of this guy. And last year he delivered. But it doesn’t come naturally to him. He’s got to force it. But the team needs him to be more physical, yes. They need him to occasionally fight.”

Asked whether the Bruins are too soft, Milbury said yes. “They played a much more physical game last year up and down the roster,” he said. “And I think when they do find their way back to it, they’ll be a better team offensively.”

Milbury is an idiot. He was a terrible player and he is a terrible sportscaster. And to single out the Philadelphia Flyers of the 1970′s . . . . What a hypocrit. He played his entire career for equally rough and tough Big Bad Bruins.

He played 12 seasons for the Bruins and ended his career with 238 points and 1552 penalty minutes.

He is best known for two things, both of which resulted in changes being made by the NHL to ensure they didn’t happen again:

On December 23, 1979, in New York, Milbury and some Bruin teammates climbed into the stands to fight the Ranger fans. Milbury caught one Ranger fan and, removed one of the fan’s shoes and beat him with it. Subsequently NHL president John Ziegler suspended Milbury for six games. This incident also resulted in the installation of higher glass panels enclosing rinks in hockey arenas.

As head coach of the Wales Conference team at the 1991 All-Star Game, Milbury generated controversy by including enforcer Chris Nilan and checker Brian Skrudland to the all-star team ahead of players such as Kirk Muller and Guy Lafleur. As a result of Milbury’s controversial roster picks, the league’s board of governors changed their policy so that future teams would be chosen by committee.

Now this clown is supposed to be the voice of reason. Give us a break.

    Okay.

    “I don’t think it’s a suspendable offense”

““Your best offensive player goes down with a resounding check — borderline check under any circumstances, maybe cheap, maybe intentional. It requires a direct response immediately”

Anyone else see a contradiction here?

  • lindsat

wow hes an idiot. it definitely warrants a suspension. I like the way cooke plays at times, but this was just dirty and it isn’t the first time. Clearly milbury has no idea what he is talking about, as usual

  • Nick

I agree; Milbury is an idiot. If the NHL want to take a stand against hits/blows to the head (which they claim to), this is the perfect opportunity to do so. I would suspend Milbury for the rest of the season and postseason and levy a large fine against him to be put into a head injury fund for player injuries. It seems obvious that Milbury had no intention of making a clean check as he could have leveled Savard by hitting him in the body. Instead he elbowed him in the head from his blind side while Savard was fully exposed on the follow through from the shot. This is not the first offense by Milbury and that fact needs to be taken into consideration as well. In my opinion, hockey is a physical sport and I enjoy a good physical game more than most but when a players intent seems to be to injure another player, I feel there is no room for him in the sport.

  • scott

umm….. the guy who hit him is matt cooke. milbury could of never played in this day and age.

  • Nick’s an idiot

The league can not suspend Milbury as he does not lay in the NHL. Cooke is the player who elbowed Savard in the head.

  • Al

I think Mike messed up on this one. I agree that the Bruins haven’t played as physically as they did last year but they have been playing hurt most of the year. Most of the core team has been injured, Savard missed 23 games, Lucic missed many, Kreji missed games….It has been a banged up year and when the players returned they had to work the kinks out. Matt Cooke is a goon, the glaring duplication of the same hit to Asinimov and Savard demonstrates that he plays with intent to injure and this warrants a suspension from the league. Sometimes Mike is too full of himself to apply reason to his thought process. Mike, it ain’t Walpole and you aren’t on a pond playing against the Italians…..

  • Jeff

It was not enough that Mike “no guts “milbury tried to ruin the B’s. For instance how he tried to soften up Cam Neely’s game in the 90′s. Now this no talent talking head has become an apologist for a head hunter. Cooke has a history of questionable hits and if the the NHL keeps turning their heads away from taking action, someone on the B’s bench better grow a pair and start stepping up for their teammates. Hey Mike, I got the perfect job for you, how about you go and broadcast womans golf or table tennis, you have obviuously have become to soft for our sport of hockey. YOUR SERVICES ARE NO LONGER NEEDED OR WANTED…

  • mike

wow! talk about idiots!!!! the lack of anyone with any knowledge in these posts is just amazing!

  • northendboy

I agree with Betts, Nick & Al. Also, there is no place for a blow to the head. The game is a rough & physical enough. There is no place for a hitman in the sport. The Olympics showed all of us that hockey can be exciting sport without fighting and cheapshots.

  • Pup13

Did you guys watch the game or are you just going by what the bruins said. Cooke did not elbow him in the head. His arms were atthe side of his body. Was it a questionable hit maybe but I wasn’t on the ice and I don’t know what was going thru his head.

  • rico

cooke being cooke. savard needs to be aware of where he is and who else is near him. matt cooke is going to make that hit every single time, no matter who the shooter is. don’t like seeing a head shot like that, but if cooke takes the body, then people say it’s richardson/booth again and still scream for a supension. it should have been a penalty is what. the lapeirre hit was suspension-worthy but i don’t know about this one. the b’s lack of response was very disappointing though.

  • rico

    and there was no elbow

  • Ivan

Hahahaha… So a Bruins broadcaster disagrees with the opinion of the majority of Bruins fans, and he’s an idiot because of it?

He didn’t contradict himself one bit. He thought Cooke’s intent was not to hurt Savard, but he’s questioning the Bruins players for not going after him simply because that’s what you’re SUPPOSED

  • Ivan

So a Bruins broadcaster disagrees with the opinion of the majority of Bruins fans, and he’s an idiot because of it? Give me a break.

He didn’t contradict himself one bit. He thought Cooke’s intent was not to hurt Savard, but he’s questioning the Bruins players for not going after him simply because that’s what you’re SUPPOSED to do when your best player goes down. You have to retaliate because there’s always the possibility that it WAS intentional and you can’t let the other team take advantage of your star players. Players don’t have the benefit of instant replay and you have to react right away after a huge like this.

The fact that I even have to explain that just goes to show you how dumb some of you Bruins fans can be, because it’s pretty obvious.

Cooke finished his check and thank God that Milbury at least is professional enough, unlike that homerish buffoon Jack Edwards, to play devil’s advocate and give Cooke the benefit of the doubt.

And he’s right on the money about Cooke. His intention was to finish his check, not to hurt Savard or hit him in the head.

And by the way, anyone among Bruins fans who after seeing the replay in slow motion still thinks that it was an elbow clearly needs to go get their eyes checked. It was squarely a shoulder hit to the head, and despite Cooke’s reputation, there is no reason to believe that he targeted the head on purpose. It was just a freak accident. Cooke needs to be more careful in the future and apparently he hasn’t learned that, so as a Penguins fan, I hope he does get suspended, because this incident was ugly enough.

But the fans who are crucifying Cooke really need to get a clue. The guy is a pretty decent hockey player who plays aggressively. He has 155 hits this year and only 28 players have more in the NHL. He does have a history of borderline hits, but he’s not trying to hurt anyone.

  • TommyShoe

Ivan from Pittsburgh, I totally agree with you on a few things. It wasn’t an elbow, but a shoulder hit TO THE HEAD! that’s what the league is trying to eliminate and even though i don’t believe he was intentionally trying to hurt Savard, he still is responsible for his actions. It’s almost like a stick infraction where you need to be incontrol of your stick, but if it accidentally clips someone in the chin, it’s still a penalty. You also stated that a good number of Cookes checks were ‘borderline’. He’s been suspended twice for similar hits, hasn’t he? Since the Bergeron hit from Jones, I am a firm believer that the player delivering the hit should be suspended fro the amount of time the player he hurt is out. The skate would be on the oter foot if Shawn Thorton buried Sid or Malkin..right! i would be embarassed for him if that was the case. the only differnce would be that the Pens would jump over the bench and take action, unlike our lifeless B’s! Where i am not a big Milbury fan, i agree with him to a point. i do however agree with you totally that Jack Edwards is a BAFFOON!

  • Rory

At least Milbury brought us to the Stanley Cup !!!! No other stupid arse coach has. Hes old school get the hell over yourselves . If he was coaching this team now they would be winning not losing like they are now!! Do I agree with his idea that is wasnt a dirty hit NO I DONT !! But to say he doesnt know what hes talking about is crap!!! You want someone to blame ? Blame the front office of the Bruins. Blame Jacobs !!! But dont blame a guy that actually tried when he played for the Bruins and has told management in the past that they suck and didnt know what they were doing. Hes always stuck up for the common Bruins fan while having at it with Jacobs. At least Milbury showed heart when it came to making the Bruins a better team compared to the chumps not trying to play now on this club hockey of a team. Mt St. Charles and Catholic Memorial can beat these guys up with no problems now. SO BLAME THE TEAM AND MANAGEMENT NOT OTHERS !!!

  • Nick

My mistake. I was pissed about Milbury’s comments and kept writing his name instead of Matt Cooke. They’re both assholes.

  • http://www.teridspringer.com Teri

I am a Pens fan and I love Matt Cooke. He gives 100% every shift. That said, I agree the hit looked borderline at best. Some of the responsibility lies with Savard- you cannot be admiring your shot and forget who is on the ice with you. And I do agree with Milbury that players do and should finish their checks. I have watched the replay and really can’t tell if Cooke raised his elbow or if he hit Marc with his shoulder. If the elbow came up- a suspension should be mandatory.

I feel really bad for Marc. He is one of my favourite players in the NHL and, given that this hit reminds me of Scott Stevens’ hit on Lindros (though not nearly as powerful)I worry that this could be the beginning of the end of Marc’s career.

  • Hollie

I am a huge Pens fan and I love Cooke! After looking at slow motion replay of the hit (I also looked at the frame by frame break down) I fully believe that Cooke went in for a legal check but Savard lowered his head during his shot causing Cooke’s hit to land on his head not on his shoulder. That being said … I still think that there should be a rule applied like the high sticking penalty. You as a player have to be responsible for your stick at all times and even if you accidentally hit someone you still get a penalty. I think that this should be the case here. Any hit to the head should be a penalty. You have a responsibility to control yourself and your hits. I do not think that a suspension is needed but there should have been a penalty during the game. I always hate to see people get hurt and I think that making it a penalty for any hit to the head intentional or not will help decrease these types of hits but still preserve the game.

  • TommyShoe

Hollie and Teri, I have a hard time believing you would be saying the same thing if it was Crosby lying on the ice after someone on the B’s hit him. Again, I have no problem with Cooke finishing his check, hell that type of player used to be the epitome of a Bruin. i felt it was a shoulder to the head, accidental, but still a shoulder to the head. The hits from behind are the same thing, you you can’t see the players eyes, you need to ease up. i’m not saying don’t play the body, but don’t run him. Same thing applies here. Open ice checks are the most exciting, but when they’re head high or even at the knees, we’re talking about people’s careers. Again, suspended for the amount of time the player is out of commission.
