A source has told WEEI.com that the Bruins and restricted free agent Mark Stuart are “very close” to reaching a one-year deal. Stuart recently chose against filing for arbitration, as he felt comfortable enough that he would be able to come to agreement with the Bruins.

In 56 games this past season, the defenseman had two goals, five assists and racked up 80 penalty minutes. He set a career high in points in the 2008-2009 season with 17.

Great signing if it happens. Stuart was a solid stay at home defensemen last season. Bruins are one solid blue liner away from having a great defensive core. Stuart has progressed nicely into a leader on the defense and I look forward to another year of his physical defensive play.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to sign Stuart for a couple of years? My reasoning is if he has a breakout year, will it not cost the Bruins alot more per season against the cap to keep him? Also wouldn’t Stuart take less money per year right now if you offer him multiple years? Another part of my reasoning is if you decide to trade Stuart during the season, isn’t he worth more as a trading chip if he is on a team friendly contract for a few years rather than one?

this is a no brainer, i don,t see what the hesitation is,stuart,s tough ,good size, good wheels, and can fight!also can shoot the puck, where,s the indecision?

a one year deal is a better deal for both parties…next year some costly contracts will be up…it will be easier for the bruins mngmnt team to pay credit where its due..i like stuart and i know he will be a great value added for the bruins…as far a wheel’s…i believe one or more of the prospects can replace him and play just as good / if not better than he did last year…not taking anything away from wheel’s as he is a good player too but still has too prove himself…
