Report: Arbitration will be for 1-year deal

According to Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe, the Bruins have chosen for tomorrow’s arbitration hearing with right winger Blake Wheeler to yield a one-year award, meaning whichever salary the arbiter deems deserved will be for a one-year deal rather than two years.

Because the player filed for arbitration, the Bruins got to choose whether the contract would be for one or two years, per the rules of the collective bargaining agreement. It should come as little surprise that the Bruins would elect just one season for Wheeler, as he remains a promising player but statistically had a down year last season in comparison to his ’08-’09 totals of 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points. Should the Bruins choose to retain Wheeler they could use the upcoming season to gauge whether or not he should be in the team’s long-term plans. In such a scenario he would become a restricted free agent after the season.

Agent Matt Keator is currently in Toronto for the hearing and Wheeler was expected to arrive sometime on Monday.

timmy wants too stay in boston…we want timmy too stay in boston…why not start timmy in providence for first half of the season…5 mil. for a player goalie coach in the ahl…save 3.5 mil. for sturm until end of november + 5mil. from timmy until end of december…still have the full team ready for the second half of the season moving into the playoffs into the stanley cup round…

    Hey Duggy,

What are you talking about? You sound like Rain Man.

Good luck getting Timmy to waive that no movement clause, Duggy. Thomas’ contract was the worst thing to happen to the Bruins since he signed it, and we’ll feel it until he’s gone. An over-paid, 35+, flopper who cant win big games. No one wants him, nor should they, for 5 mil a year. His 5 mil could have got us a scoring wing last year and a decent back-up for Tuukka. Think a little. Please stop wearing your a$$ as a hat.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE, DMac! Thomas winning the Vezina was the worst possible thing for the Bs. His trade value was never higher yet they felt obligated to give him a contract and now they are paying for it. Rask was absolutely ready to step in as #1 and they blew it with the Thomas signing. The only flopper that ever won anything was Hasek, and Thomas is not Hasek. He’s a likeable guy and a good goalie but he will not win a Stanley Cup as a #1.

Thanks DZ…tell me though, when did Hasek win the cup as the starter? Only supports the argument more, I think.
