Mark Recchi, Andrew Ference absent as Bruins return to practice 03.07.11 at 10:43 am ET

WILMINGTON — The Bruins took the ice at Ristuccia Arena Monday morning as they gear up for a stretch this week that features three games in four nights. They’ll kick things off Tuesday in Montreal before hosting the Sabres Thursday and heading to Long Island on Friday.

Everyone was accounted for at Bruins practice but Mark Recchi, Steve Kampfer and Andrew Ference. Patrice Bergeron returned to the B’s for Monday’s skate after missing Saturday’s game due to personal reasons. With Recchi not on the ice, Tyler Seguin took his spot on Bergeron and Brad Marchand‘s line.

This day in Bruins history is a memorable one, but not for good reason. It was a year ago that Matt Cooke changed Marc Savard‘s career with a blindside hit in Pittsburgh.

Still one of the dirtiest hits I have ever seen in hockey. Cooke clearly could have hit Savard anywhere and decided to aim for his head. If Colin Campbell can watch this and not see that; than he is dumber than he sounds on the radio. The penalty for these types of hits is still not punitive enough. The league needs to change the punishment to something like,

“If a player intentionally attempts to injure another player by aiming for the head, then the player who laid out the hit should be suspended for as long as the player he hit is unable to play due to the injury that was caused by the hit.”

Or the NHL should allow bench clearing brawls again so that the players can referee the games themselves because right now the league is only protecting the punks like cooke and enabling them to take those head shots.

Also, how can Campbell possibly defend giving Avery (even if he is a dirtbag) a five game suspension last year for saying “sloppy seconds” and not even give Cooke a game suspension for that hit. Which has caused more damage to the league and its players? Campbell should be fired, he is a biased piece of crap and let his personal feelings for Savard change the issue.

    Does anyone disagree?
