Zdeno Chara following Max Pacioretty hit: ‘That’s not my my style to hurt somebody’ 03.08.11 at 10:53 pm ET
By DJ Bean

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was given a five-minute interference major and a game misconduct when a hit along the boards forced Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty to hit his head on the glassed area and left him motionless on the ice. After the game, Chara spoke about the play.

“Obviously, that wasn’t my intention to push him into the post,” Chara told reporters following the game. “It’s very unfortunate. In that situation, everything’s happening fast, and you’re not planning to do that. That’s not my style to hurt somebody. I always play hard, play physical, but I never try to hurt anybody. I’m hoping he’s OK.”

“I think what people have to understand is Zdeno is not a dirty player,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said in his postgame interview with NESN’s Naoko Funayama. “He certainly never meant for that to happen. I think if anything he tried to rub him out in the boards. Unfortunately it’s the partition that did the damage. If it’s anywhere else on the ice, it might be a normal interference call at worst. Unfortunately he hit the partition. That’s something that we’ve happen often. I know there’s padding there and we’ve tried to rectify that as far as helping guys not get hie in that area, but it still continues to happen.”

He did intend to hurt, as did the rest of the team. Suspend him for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

bullshit. he is a clean player. however, i like the idea of people who injure having to sit out as long as the injured player.

Joe must be Habs fan…thinking with his heart and not with his head. Look at that play again. there as no intent there. It was a late hit at the most that warranted an interference call but not dirty.

I have seen the ying and the yang at work many times, nothing good will happen to Mr. Chara for a long time, he did not intend to hurt him, but he did intend to take out the Habs top scorer of late.

Talking with my head, Chara didn’t want to injured him at the beginning… but the way Bruins were playing trailing 4-0 he wanted to create something. He was beaten by Paccioretty’s speed and did want to make a spectacular hit as pushing him on the bench… anything else than let him go. That’s what happened when you are too stupid to control your frustration at 15seconds before the end of a period! He looks to have a prehistoric brain!!!

Mr Chara bodychecked a player who did not have the puck, this carries a 2 minute interference penalty in the NHL. I think when you injure someone when breaking a rule you deserve a suspension, I think if the league had handed out a 2 game suspension 95% of this would have gone away and almost everyone would have been happy. This also sets the standard to compare future hits with, so it is going to be harder to hand out suspensions to players who might do this intentionally. I think the NHL has to nip this in the bud or they could face different levels of government intrevention in lots of areas of Canada and the USA, and I think a lot of advertiseing money is at stake as well. Air Canada could the first of many companies to move money away. Most people want to see less concussions, so I feel the league is sending the wrong message right now.

If that play was anywhere else on the ice we are not talking about this! Skating at that speed its hard to imagine people actually thinking Chara tried to direct him into the stantion! The hits to the head are happening in open ice, elbows and shoulders popping up at the last second. Now we have the Montreal Police looking into filing charges; give me a break.

Chara is one of the more clean hard hitters in the league. Only he knows if he intended to take him into the partition. I think a new rule needs to be put in place in relation to these areas of the ice that with the speed and strength of the players today could kill someone. Just like players need to now be aware of hits to the head that could in suspension- a hit in these vulnerable areas of the ice should result in a match penalty and possible suspension review by the league in the future. The partitions in this area should be painted a different bright color so players will be aware of them and there locations throughout the league rinks. The game today with the new rules, faster and more conditioned players from all over the world has never been more exciting to watch. It is a contact sport and players like Chara and the Rangers Ryan Callahan are masters at using there clean bodychecks as part of the game. There is know place for this type of hit and sometimes a new rule- for all the players can be a deterrent for future play. Scott Stevens was considered to be be one of the most feared clean hard hitters of his time. With the game evolving and the concussions that he inflicted, because at the time the shoulder check to the head was legal, the league has made changes to protect the players. Hopefully the league can learn from this tragic incident and make the changes needed to protect the players
