Max Pacioretty ‘disgusted’ league didn’t suspend Zdeno Chara 03.09.11 at 10:30 pm ET

Max Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and fractured vertebrae. (AP)

An upset Max Pacioretty spoke to TSN’s Bob McKenzie Wednesday night, doing little to hide his feelings a day after a Zdeno Chara hit into a stanchion along the boards left him with a severe concussion and a fractured vertebrae.

“I am upset and disgusted that the league didn’t think enough of (the hit) to suspend him,” Pacioretty told McKenzie. “I not mad for myself, I’m mad because if other players see a hit like that and think it’s okay, they won’t be suspended, then other players will get hurt like I got hurt.

“It’s been an emotional day. I saw the video for the first time this morning. You see the hit, I’ve got a fractured vertebrae, I’m in hospital and I thought the league would do something, a little something. I’m not talking a big number, I don’t know, one game, two games, three games…whatever, but something to show that it’s not right.”

Chara said both after the game and after Wednesday’s practice that he did not intend to hurt the 22-year-old forward, and that the fact that he went into the turnbuckle was “very, very, very unfortunate.” Pacioretty isn’t buying it.

“I heard (Chara) said he didn’t mean to do it,” Pacioretty told TSN. “I felt he did mean to do it. I would feel better if he said he made a mistake and that he was sorry for doing that, I could forgive that, but I guess he’s talking about how I jumped up or something.

“I believe he was trying to guide my head into the turnbuckle. We all know where the turnbuckle is. It wasn’t a head shot like a lot of head shots we see but I do feel he targeted my head into the turnbuckle.”

Someone should inform Patches that the quote he’s referring to was fabricated by a Habs fans and Chara’s actual response said he “hopes [Pacioretty] is okay.”

Stay off the tracks when the train is coming, if I see a man of that size coming at me, I’m gonna get out of the way.

Don’t sugar coat it behind being Bruins Fans ,,, what Chara did was wrong and he knows it! He is a star of the league and above getting punished as he is the captian of the Bruins ,,, doesn’t make it right .

Sad day for those who cheer for the black & gold

  • john

Chara rode him out. Yes it was interference and he got 5 minutes and a game misconduct for the penalty.
If you look at Chara’s history, how can you say that he intended to concuss anyone, let alone break his neck.
As a long time bruin fan, I can honestly say while its too bad someone got hurt, I don’t feel its a sad day at all. Go Bruins…

  • Neal

Disgusting hit. Should have had a 30 game suspension.
The league should go to jail for giving no suspension.

Next game some one should break Lucik’s jaw by breaking a stick over his face
and then say ” I didn’t intend to hurt him. Then the league can say
“oh you didn’t mean to hurt him, O.K. No suspension if you didn’t mean to hurt him.

  • Brad

Typical Bruins Fans! Our players did nothing wrong. I remember Savard getting hurt and the outcry then.
You can’t have it both ways. Chara should have gotten a suspension. This guy’s career could be over and Chara skates.
Anybody got tickets to the B’s-Habs game at the Garden in a few weeks. Thinking blood bath.

  • MacD

Neal, you moron! Did you forget already how almost a year to the day ago Cooke, who has a long history of targeting people and intending to injure, didnt get suspended for probably ending Marc Savard’s career on a much more blatantly dirty play? There’s no rule againt what Chara did and it sucks it happened, though to a Canadiens player, so I find it a little harder to care, but to wish harmful retaliation on another player? Get off the pipe, ‘tard…

  • Neal

Yes, and Cooke should have been suspended. We don’t need that in hockey.
I am not just picking on the bruins. Cooke should have received 30 games also. Then this stuff would not happen. Cooke after missing 30 games would say to himself “I would not do that again”. The league by not giving
suspensions is basically saying keep doing it. In Chara’s case and in Cooke’s case. The league keeps wondering why all these serious injuries and can’t figure it out. Suspend someone and it will stop real quick.

  • matt

Clean play, right call. Interference was the only call. It isn’t against the rules to check someone into the turnbuckle. Max, Max, Max, stop being French and crying in your crepes.

  • Mike

There’s no crying in hockey. Pacioretty has taken harder hits against the boards then this one. The only difference is the post. Perhaps he thinks Chiara put the post there for this specific purpose. Or maybe he thinks Chiara knew the post was there and was just waiting for someone to come into that area so he could wrap them around the post. Had Pacioretty been one step faster, we wouldn’t be talking about this. How many posts are there in all the arenas and how often has this happened? Once? It was just a freak accident–period.

  • Matt

This is hockey, not baseball. Chara was finishing his check and if occurred anywhere else on the rink that interference penalty doesn’t even get called. It was a clean hit, end of story. No elbows, his feet didn’t leave the ice, he didn’t take strides while delivering the hit, the player wasn’t facing the boards or otherwise prone. Everything Chara did was within the rules of the game except for the hit coming a little behind the puck, which happens dozens of times a game to every player in the league.

Neal, guys like Scott Stevens made a living by delivering big CLEAN hits that left many opponents with concussions. It’s part of the game. You don’t hear Wes Welker crying when he gets his bell thoroughly rung catching passes over the middle. It’s part of the game, he knows it, and accepts it. You and Pacioretty need to do the same. Hitting and checking is part of hockey, yet some players seem to forget that. Pacioretty knew it was coming. He was ready for the check. A lot of people have criticized Chara for finishing his check. Maybe Pacioretty shouldn’t have been racing for a puck destined for the Bruins zone with 15.9 seconds left and with a 4-0 lead…. Hmmm…. that idea sounds just as stupid as yours. You go all-out until the whistle blows. That’s pro sports.

  • Rasta

You kiddin me ?? What is bad about it ?? Put the same hit on the otherside of the ice and the kid not only does not get injured , but he also, probably, would have outskated Chara and missed the brunt of the hit. To say that it is a sad day for bruins fans is a joke .

  • Dave

I really don’t get how any of these people speaking against Chara’s hit can look themselves in the mirror and say that they are making a good judgement. Never mind what Pacioretti is saying that he thinks it was intentional!! Everyone please wake up and watch the replay carefully he got hit & then his head hit the glass. End of story. I feel bad about him getting hurt but unfortunately Canadians hate anything to do with USA teams & will always speak loudly when something doesn’t go their way!!

    Ever heard of Karma?
Ever seen this kids hit in the back, in december?
Also, barely an interference, definitely not a misconduct

  • Bob

It is quite unfortunate that Max Pacioretti was seriously injured by what was otherwise a clean check. The fact is that there have been numerous times this season when not only were guys not punished by the league but they were not even penalized for what were clearly not clean hits. This is true across the league because the officiating is anything but consistent. As was mentioned there was the hit that put Marc Savard out for the season and possibly for his career. More recently there was the hit recently on either Campbell or Kampfer that was finished clearly with an elbow and nothing was called. It was even commented on by the crew calling the game.

The league needs to be more consistent with its review policy and start penalizing officials in some way for not calling blatant penalties that happen right in front of them.

  • Neal

It is not a clean check. He did not have the puck !!!!!!!.I wish people would stop repeating that was a clean hit. It’s been repeated so often Bruin fans are now believing it.Matt Cooke’s hit because you repeat that Matt
Cooke’s hit was legal does not make it so.When you don’t have the puck you can’t hit people. Checking is to seperate the puck and the player with the puck. Not to run around and hit anyone who is standing. In that case when the puck is at one end of the rink a player could skate down the other end
of ice take out the goalie 200 ft away and say I was finishing my check.
NO, you can’t . He does not have the puck. No puck , no touch.

I think Chara should be gone for the year, he clearly came up behind Max and elbowed him to the head . I am a big Bruins fan but what is wrong is wrong, and I don’t think the Bruins would miss him he is a bum.

  • David Clough

    “Dave says

“I think Chara should be gone for the year, he clearly came up behind Max and elbowed him to the head . I am a big Bruins fan but what is wrong is wrong, and I don’t think the Bruins would miss him he is a bum.”

Dave–You’re an idiot. And change your name, too.

  • I actually saw the hit

Dave isn’t so smart. Elbowed him in the head? When? It was shoulder to shoulder, he didn’t hit him in the head. But Chara is easily a top 3 stay at home defenseman in this league, so I guess that makes him a bum.

But leave it to Max to blame people. Maybe when you run at guys after your team scores game winning goals, karma catches up to you.

And to all you Habs lovers looking for vengeance, there is only one question. Who? You have all crying, flopping girls on your team.

  • Rasta

It wasn’t a hit!!!! Have u ever Watched hockey!!?? It wa not anything resembling a hit. He “rubbed him out” AT BEST .

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... Jack

Maybe if the canadiens didn’t act like they were being mamed everytime they got hit the league would have come to different conclusion. The Habs are renowned for their oscar award performances when confronted physically. Suck it up it’s hockey not ping pong.

  • Gern

The ref did not call for a hit to the head and it was a stretch to call interference as well. The rule states…”Possession of the Puck: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession.” So Max was concidered to be in possesion of the puck, therefore it was not an illegal hit.

  • KMB

After reading Pacioretty’s comments…. He DOES have a concussion! Or still pumped full of pain killers!
Max next time you see that stanchion coming, lay down don’t jump into it! I think you’re jumping into it was your way of trying to make the incident look more dramatic, unfortunately you didn’t plan on the outcome. Does that sound retarded? No more retarded than Pacioretty’s comments about how he knows Chara was trying to turnbuckle him!

  • Biff

IF the check was made anywhere else in the rink
    IF Pacioretty was faster
    IF the puck was closer

The context is there for everybody to see.
    It HAPPENED at the turnbuckle
Pacioretty WAS going as fast as he was going
    the puck WAS that far
and Chara still pushed him into the turnbuckle, head first while both of them were facing the same way

arguing that Chara didn’t see the turnbuckle is so ignorant its stupid,
it should be instinct that you have enough respect not to push anyone but the puck carrier in there
but maybe in that split second Chara saw 67 and bad blood resurfaced, even for that split second
it takes that much to pull a trigger, and you can get life for murder
well Chara came an inch close to killer Pacioretty, thats the truth, an inch higher on the neck, it would’ve been murder
regardless of Chara’s clean record he did what he did and if the league keeps excusing this, of course his record is gonna stay that way

  • A Pacia

Being a fan of hockey for over 45 years, I wish you would all learn the sport before you make comments!

  • ninio

the Montreal police as launch a criminal investigation , the habs fans called 911 from everywhere, the police had to make a public anouncement to stop calling that 911 was for real emergencys. I`ve seen lots of hockey games in my time i remember when Chelios charge Brian Propp of the Flyers in the playoff and raise is elbow and knocked him right out , all the fans in Montreal are crazy.

  • ninio

the monteal media is making a mountain of this issue , every french media in quebec are talking about it. They took a still picture of the action right where Max hit the station and you see Chara glove close Max face , people are going nuts . Then the media are saying that it was done on purpose . Lets go Bruins keep hitting them in the boards make`em cry for real.

  • Bongo

Hockey NOT Ping Pong(Love it!) Big vs Little ………Big Wins!
