Brad Marchand calls out Matt Cooke, while Claude Julien takes subtle jab 03.21.11 at 12:48 pm ET

WILMINGTON — The Bruins’ dressing room seemed to be silent Monday when it came to discussing Matt Cooke‘s latest cheap shot. Shawn Thornton didn’t like the idea of commenting on it, while Johnny Boychuk claimed to have not seen the hit. Despite not everybody talking, Brad Marchand and even coach Claude Julien said enough to make it clear that Cooke’s act is not appreciated in these parts.

The Bruins, of course, have a direct tie to Cooke in that they are currently playing without Marc Savard, who has not been the same since Cooke blind-sided him last season.

“I think that it’s about time he gets — he’s got to be taught a lesson,” Marchand said. “He’s doing that stuff left, right, and center. I expect that he’ll probably get a bunch of games, but he’s got to be taught a lesson. You can’t be running around doing that stuff all the time. He’s going to seriously hurt someone again. Look at Savvy, and now McDonagh. He could have easily hurt him.

“It just seems to be part of his game. He likes to throw cheap shots around. I don’t know if he’ll learn. Hopefully he does. Hopefully he doesn’t hurt someone to the point where their career is over. You want to get that stuff out of the game, and hopefully he does learn his lesson.”

Marchand is coming off a two-game suspension of his own for a blindside elbow on Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger last week. As a first-time offender, Marchand and Julien hope that theta young forward’s lesson has been learned, but when asked about Marchand, Julien worked in a jab at Cooke.

“I think you need to trust your players to do the right things,” Julien said. “You have to trust your players that they’ve learned from those things and they don’t let it happen, although there are certain guys in the league that don’t seem to be learning.”

There was a light-hearted reaction to the Cooke reference, though when asked to comment further on the Penguins forward, Julien got serious and politely declined.

“No reaction, no comment,” Julien said. “I think right now I’ve got my hands full with trying to get our team back on track. This is an opportunity for me to let the league do their job.”

This is clearly a case where Matt Cooke targeted the head with an elbow shot (again). He could have hit McDonagh anywhere because he never saw the hit coming. Of course, Cooke being the little DB he is, went for a head shot. In cases where it is so obvious there is intent to injure like this one; the offending player should be out of hockey for as long as the player he hit is out of the game. Clearly these little one to two game suspensions are not punitive enough to prevent these types of plays (Last year when Cooke hit Savard and clearly targeted the head; he was not even suspended).

I think there are obvious plays where the guy is targeting the head to cause injury. The Chara and Marchand hits were both clearly not intentional just unfortunate and appropriately punished in both cases. However, the Richards hit, the Randy Jones hit, Cooke on Savard, Cooke in this video, Bertuzzi’s hit, even McSorley swinging at a guys head with his stick are all more than obviously intent to injure. These types of plays should be removed from the game just as players like Cooke and Bertuzzi should not be in the NHL anymore. Just ask Steve Moore or Marc Savard about these two morons as both are now out of the NHL because of cheap shots.

Any Penguins fan that still roots for Cooke should be ashamed of themselves. If I had a Cooke jersey I would be hiding it in shame or burning it. I hope they give this piece of crap 10 plus games to finally send him a message. Let him watch how real hockey players play the game.

This is so funny coming from Marchand, look after you own hits Marchand. Hard to believe you can comment on this when you are coming off your own suspension you have no place commenting on the matter. Prove that you will not repeat then come and make you holier than thou comments. GO Matt .. see you in the 2nd round. And Deano stick you fans should be ashamed for cheering for COOKE .. I am not he can play the game, he scores goals and has assist. Great on the PK .. he plays the game hard and sometimes being short he gets his arms up to high. Pathetic !!

Laughter, you have to be kidding me. Watch the games without a biased eye and you will certainly see a major difference between the hits laid out by Cooke and Marchand. You are clearly a Penguins fanboy who doesn’t get it.

Cooke has been suspended over five times for over the top intentional head shot hits. Secondly, I was right in my statement as the NHL agrees with me and gave Cooke more than ten games. Obviously, you know more about the game than the top NHL brass right? Thats why every player and ex player has been calling out Cooke all week, the guy is a dirty little punk and you should be ASHAMED to root for him. If he was a Bruin and he took out Sidney Crosby with that same hit last year, how would you feel then?

Also, Marc Savard is still not playing because of an intentional head shot by Matt Cooke. His life has been seriously altered and he now has to worry about his long term health. The NHL instituted a new rule because of that hit, never mind his last hit which was also an intentional head shot on the blind side of a player. I do not care what else Cooke brings to the table as a player, the NHL has enough talent that there is no reason to have players like Cooke on the ice if he cannot control himself.

If Cooke was a real man he would have hit Marc Savard and McDonagh with his shoulder to their shoulder, but as he always does, Cooke went for an elbow to the head. If you can’t see that you are blind.

The Marchand hit, which I posted about on the video of the hit, I said he should get a game for hitting the guy in the head accidentally with his elbow and he was appropriately punished. Even if Marchand’s hit was accidental it deserved a game or two suspension as he hit a guy in the head with his elbow. I call it as I see it, if there was any proof that Marchand did it intentionally, I would call him out. But there isn’t so shut your mouth and don’t try calling me out. Watch the games, you might learn something.
