Mike Murphy hopes to do away with post-Alexandre Burrows finger ‘crap’

NHL vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy met with the media Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena to discuss the league’s disciplinary actions in the Stanley Cup finals. Murphy suspended Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome for four games due to a late hit that ended Nathan Horton‘s series, something he viewed as a bad situation for the game given that the finals lost two players.

While Murphy’s decision on Rome has been well-received by people throughout the game, the league has been under heat since electing to not suspend Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows for biting Patrice Bergeron in Game 1. Since then, Burrows factored into all three Canucks’ goals in a Vancouver win in Game 2, while players from both teams have waved their fingers at one another and stuck their fingers in one another’s mouths, mocking the play on which Bergeron cut his finger and had to receive a tetanus shot.

Murphy said Tuesday that his intention is for such actions, for which Mark Recchi and Milan Lucic were criticized by Claude Julien, to stop.

“We made the right decision on Alex Burrows,” Murphy said. “We spoke with Alex, but I’m not here to speak about that. I dealt with that. We’ve moved on past that.

“We will deal with the issues of the series, the choppiness that’s gone on. [Senior vice president of hockey operations] Kris King is in charge of the series. We’ve addressed it. We’ve addressed it with the teams as early as this morning. I will be speaking with both general managers and coaches before the day is over about the crap that we’re seeing and the garbage that’s going on and some of the issues.”

If it is true that Bergeron got bit it was his own fault. Someone who shoves
his fist in someone’s mouth has to deal with what happens.Maybe Burrows should just do what Lucic does and just slash him back and punch Bergeron in the head instead. Maybe the Bruin fans would be happier with that.
Or do what Chara does, Break someone’s neck so that he can’t play for 35 games and not get suspended. Maybe Bruin fans would enjoy that better. If the Bruins were called for all there penalties they would not win a game or even come close to winning. They wouldn’t have made it past the first round.

Maybe if you watched the play and saw burrows pull the glove in and gnaw on it you wouldn’t be saying shit. Burrows deserved what he got from Lucic. Also if you think Chara did that on purpose you are a moron.

Neal u r obviously a Vancouver fan. Apparently this must be the only series that u have watched that the Bruins have played in. I don’t think I’ve seen a team flopso much since the Montreal series. Go figure another puss_ Canadian team flopping. After that bull crap hit, by that nobody Aaron Rome, u really should keep ur mouth shut. U have no room to b talking about Chara and a hit the NHL deemed unfortunate, but LEGAL! Please do us all a favor Neal and go back to Canada.

I have watch every Stanley Cup game in every series so far. I am a Detroit fan… that said NO team is as disgraceful to the NHL as the Boston bruins are. No one should weep for Horton. You do bad hits… expect them back. Boston has been on the winning sides of the missed calls in a heavy way. They should be happy they are still in the finals for if the calls that should have been made were… Boston would have easily lost by now.

Rome got suspended because Horton got injured… if he hadn’t it would have been just a penalty … if it was even called at all.

I have seen over and over the hit Chara did and Rome’s hit and I think they have not been weighed by the same scale.

The ignorance of most hockey fans today tells me they know nothing about the game and clearly have never stepped foot on the ice. The hit on Horton was viscous and players don’t make those kind of hits if they are “honest” and have “integrity”. The NHL is a joke and they are going to lose the core of their fanbase that actually know the game. They are allowing the game to turn into a professional wrestling atmosphere. You can’t bite players…done…the leagues obligation is to knock that out of the picture immediately… There is a big differece between Chara rubbing someone out and throwing a late shoulder at someone’s head. I hate Rome, I hate Cook, I hate grossly biased fans, and yes I’m starting to hate the NHL!

Oh and by the way…when is someone going to get the balls to call all of these “embelishments”…. I believe Brick said in the Montreal series “it’s embarassing”. WWE watch out!

I love when Americans talk smack about hockey. Makes them sound so arrogant and dumb. Stick to the NBA or something. It’s not that Chara purposely did it, although, if you hit someone in that position, and with that force, you know you will do some damage. So Chara had some idea the outcome of the hit. About Rome’s hit, he doesn’t need to “keep his mouth shut.” Let me educate you, the NHL says it is okay to hit someone .5 seconds after he doesn’t have the puck. Rome’s hit was under a second. So it was barely late. Like a quarter of a second. If it wasn’t late ..no penalty (completely clean hit.) So I have
no idea what you’re talking about. you can’t even compare Rome’s hit to Chara’s
heartless action. Oh, PS our goalie doesn’t come out and lay the body on people. Can you see Lou getting away with that? I can’t
Boston needs all the help they can get from the refs if they want to win the cup.

@ BIZZMAN, it’s funny you say all of that. Saying biased fans and all.
You clearly “don’t know the game of hockey” if you call his hit vicious. Chara’s hit was from behind, and head shot, and sent him to the hospital.
Rome’s hit was clean, and Horton just isn’t tough enough to handle it.
B’s just don’t have many people who can lay out a hit as perfectly executed as Ballard, Rome, Hamhuis, and Bieksa.
If that hit was even a quarter of a second sooner, there wouldn’t have been a penalty.

Steve…you’ve never been on the ice. Thanks for the analysis from the couch with a bucket of popcorn where you’ve learned the game of hockey.

  • BIZZMAN

Biting and diving may be part of the game north of the boarder…not so much in Boston :)

The root of your writing whilst appearing agreeable in the beginning, did not settle properly with me after some time. Somewhere within the sentences you actually were able to make me a believer unfortunately only for a while. I however have a problem with your jumps in assumptions and you would do well to fill in all those breaks. When you can accomplish that, I could surely end up being fascinated.
