The Bruins announced Tuesday morning that first-line right wing Nathan Horton is out for the remainder of the Stanley Cup finals due to a severe concussion. Horton left Monday’s 8-1 Bruins’ Game 3 win in the first period on a stretcher after taking a blindside hit to the head from Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome.

Horton had 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 21 postseason games prior to the hit, though he did not have a point in the Stanley Cup finals. He totaled 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points in the regular season.

With Horton out, the Bruins will likely turn to Michael Ryder on the first line, with Tyler Seguin re-entering the lineup on the team’s third line with Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley.

  • Go bruins

    get well soon!

  • Branden

This just in: the NHL has said there was no visual evidence of Rome intentionally hitting Horton, so there will be no suspensions. In fact, they’ve given Vancouver a power play to start Game 4 because Horton got in Rome’s way.

  • mdz

Why does it seem like only Bruins players get concussions. This is there 4th concussion to a top foward in the last two years. Most teams don’t even have 1 player thats had a concussion and here we are with our 4th. Does anyone have a theory on this?

  • billyboy

Branden, that was my FB post last night, LOL. MDZ, two words, Sidney Crosby. I could also cite Max Pacioretty, but how truthful the Canadiens were about hi injury is up for debate… as of late April, the Concussion Blog reports 99 concussions during the regular season.

  • Jonny

mdz, maybe because we’re so focused on the Bruins we don’t notice other teams. You may be forgetting that Sidney Crosby missed quite a bit of the year with a concussion.

Some really sick stats on the NHL Concussions Blog at the end of the regular season. It claims that NHL games average 0.4 concussions (that’s almost one concussion every two games) and 1.2 concussions for every game night for all the teams playing that night.

As for individual teams, Horton’s concussion was the fifth for a Bruin this year (they reported 4 during the regular season). The Colorado Avalanche led the league with 10.

  • BooWooWoo

I would take your complaints a lot more seriously if we had heard same thing when Chara tried to kill Pacioretti

  • Deano

Horton will be severely missed by this Bruins team. He was a great player all year long and was a key to the first line’s success. He always played best once he had gotten pissed off, playing with a snarl. The chemistry between Horton, Lucic and Krecji was apparent to me. This is a major blow, even if it galvanizes the team this should not have been needed for this Bruins team to play their best game.

The only way to send a real message with the punishment of Rome is to suspend him for the same duration as Horton is unable to play. I have said this countless times in the past and the league keeps dishing out these little 1 or 2 game suspensions and we keep seeing more and more of these hits. Think Vancouver really cares about losing Rome for 2 games when the Bruins lost Horton maybe until halfway through next season? Send a message when there is a clear violation of rule 48.1, Rome a. hit Horton way too late, b. left his feet to make the hit, c. targeted the head with his shoulder. The NHL needs to make the punishment equivalent to the crime and anything less than suspending Rome for the rest of the playoffs is a joke.

  • Deano

    Boowoowoo,

Comparing this hit to the one by Chara is moronic at best. The Chara hit was not anywhere near the same league as this hit.

1- Chara did not leave his feet to make the hit.
2-If Max Paciorretty did not get hurt on the play there would not have been a penalty on the hit.
3- Chara’s hit was not late, it was a hockey play, which is why he was not suspended.
4-The injury to Paciorretty was caused by the stansion not Chara’s shoulder to his head.
5- Chara does not have a history of these types of play’s whereas Rome does.
6- Max Pacioretty saw the hit coming which is why he lowered his shoulder and accelerated towards Chara / the stansion
7- Multiple hall of fame players (not just ex bruins) came out in support of Chara saying it was not an intentional dirty hit, it was bad luck and bad timing. But obviously you know more than ex NHL players right?

I am sorry but you are an idiot. If you are going to comment at least have half a brain.

Are u kidding, the video clearly showed Rome turnin towards horty after passing,Rome waited and didn’t even start his check til the puck was released, clearly intentional&late.not to mention he did leave his feet a little, maybe actually watch instead of taking the anylists opinions.he did exactly what he meant too

  • BooHooToo

Yeah, it was a dirty hit. But watching Homer McBeaners trying to call for a suspension while defending Chara’s hit on Pacioretty is amusing. Both late, high hits resulting in majors, game misconducts and the end of the opposing player’s season. Rome left his feet (albeit while following through) while Chara got his elbow up. If anything, the fact that Chara drove the opponent into a stantion probably makes his hit slightly more punishable.

But don’t tell that to the Homer McBeaners. Their Big Sad Bruins are ALWAYS victims. They don’t suckerpunch guys with their gloves on. They don’t spray opposing fans with water bottles. They don’t dive (Marchand, Ferrence, Chara). They don’t have tantrums after clean hits (Hamhuis on Loose Cheeks) attack (Krejci) and spray (Seguin) the offending player with water. No, not the Big Sads.

Here’s to a speedy and complete recovery for Nathan Horton. I hope he surprises everyone and comes back for some of this series. But enough with the whining Beaners. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. This is effing hockey.

  • Todd

Couldn’t agree more Deano! I have said the same thing all season; Penalize the offending player the amount of time that the injured player is out and maybe they would think twice about making that hit again.
BooHooHoo, Chara is a big player and he did interfere with Paciorretty and when he rubbed him out of the play into the boards it just so happened the stanchion was where Paciorretty contacted the boards and inflicted whatever injury that was caused.Chara got an interference penalty on the play, cut and dry………..Get over it!

  • DJKuulA

Make your points, but if you want to be taken seriously, don’t try to compare the Rome hit to the Chara hit.

  • timmyt30

http://scotthoughts1.blogspot.com/2011/06/bruins-embarrass-canucks-8-1-lose.html Bruins embarrass Canucks, Canucks embarrass themselves Get well soon Nathan. Sucks another guy has to go through this. Dirty hit

  • Gary

Tell the Sedin girls to expect more of the same heavy-hitting (legal hitting) in game 4…now the B’s know how much they enjoy tough hard-hitting old fashioned hockey! Get practicing on your diving & put your false teeth back in…wimps.

  • The Inconvenient Truth

    BooHooToo-

Looks like the NHL finally ruled on the difference between the Chara and the Rome hit. Apparently they don’t see things the way you do. …Imagine that. I love it. You can go on and on with all your biased blabbermouthing about how unfair it is. Yet, when the hammer falls, NHL sides with common sense, not you.

Also, for what it’s worth, why does a team that has such incredible talent (and they really do) take so many obvious dives? It’s almost laughable.

Live by the sword/ignorance of the truth, die by the sword/ignorance of the truth.

I love when fans get all pumped up like chest-beating neanderthals only to find that they were wrong. Well, at least as far as the NHL is concerned, which is ultimately all that matters. Finger sandwich?

  • Jeff

Hey Boohoo, you want to talk about flopping and diving the Habs, dive more than the entire Olympic dive teams.

  • Zaxdad666

Boo Hoo obviously doesn’t want to be taken seriously, hence his name. Give him a break B’s fans. He’s surely Canadian and idiocy is what passes for wit in the great white north. Get well soon Horton. Hey Boo, are you a Yankee fan too?

  • BIZZMAN

The ignorance of most hockey fans today tells me they know nothing about the game and clearly have never stepped foot on the ice. The hit on Horton was viscous and players don’t make those kind of hits if they are “honest” and have “integrity”. The NHL is a joke and they are going to lose the core of their fanbase that actually know the game. They are allowing the game to turn into a professional wrestling atmosphere. You can’t bite players…done…the leagues obligation is to knock that out of the picture immediately… There is a big differece between Chara rubbing someone out and throwing a late shoulder at someone’s head. I hate Rome, I hate Cook, I hate grossly biased fans, and yes I’m starting to hate the NHL!

  • BIZZMAN

Oh and by the way…when is someone going to get the balls to call all of these “embelishments”…. I believe Brick said in the Montreal series “it’s embarassing”. WWE watch out!
