Max Pacioretty obviously upset Bruins won the Stanley Cup 06.22.11 at 12:01 am ET
By DJ Bean

Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty signed a two-year contract extension with the team this week, and upon signing told The Score that he could not watch the Bruins celebrate winning the Stanley Cup last week given that the Habs nearly eliminated the B’s in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Pacioretty did not play in the series, of course, as he missed the rest of the season after a March 8 hit into the stanchion at the Bell Centre from Zdeno Chara left him severely concussed and with a fractured vertebrae.

“I’m going to be dead honest with you, I actually turned the game off when I knew it was over. I didn’t want to see any of that,” Pacioretty said of the celebration. “Just knowing that that team won the Cup was definitely hard, because I know that we were so close to beating them.

“Maybe if we had a full roster, we would have beaten them. It’s unfortunate, but it’s given me a lot of motivation this summer, and I hope to use it to be strength and be able to do whatever it takes to get ready for next year and hopefully be the one lifting the Cup next year.”

Pacioretty’s recovery from his concussion has gone well, much like that of Nathan Horton, who was lost for the rest of the Stanley Cup finals in Game 3 on a head shot from Vancouver defenseman Aaron Rome. A host of the show asked the Habs forward a very leading question, seemingly to get him to call out Horton for embellishing much like Mark Recchi did of Pacioretty, but Pacioretty, who had tweeted his well-wishes for Horton at the time of the Rome hit, was just happy to see that his rival was OK.

“Concussions are a weird thing. Everyone’s brain is different, so it doesn’t matter really how hard you’re hit or how hard you’re knocked out for. Everyone’s brain reacts differently,” he said. “I think mine was similar to the case of Horton’s, where we were both unconscious for a long period of time but came back a couple days later and had no symptoms since. I hope the same for him and I would never say he embellished his injury at all. I know exactly what he’s going through and I hope a lot of fans out there are trying to realize the same thing now.”

As for Recchi’s and many people on Twitter’s reaction to him seeing a movie days after his concussion, Pacioretty still seemed a bit burned.

“It definitely shows the type of fans that Boston Bruins fans are,” Pacioretty said, “because I definitely still — I try not to look at it, but through Twitter I still get some pretty nasty stuff regarding embellishing injury, and it’s sad that people can actually think that way, especially after it happens to someone on their own team.”

The NHL reworded Rule 48, which focuses on hits to the head, on Tuesday. Pacioretty has made his thoughts on Chara’s hit very public, and was outwardly disappointed with the league when Chara was not suspended. He hasn’t let up on his line of thinking.

“It was definitely frustrating,” he said of the fact that Chara, who was tossed from the game, was not suspended. “It’s like what everybody really talks about. They’ve got to stay consistent with head shots. It might not be the same type of head shot as everyone else’s experiences, but everyone who plays hockey knows that that’s an illegal play. I mean, he got kicked out of the game, and it ended up with me having a broken neck and out for the season with a concussion as well, so I definitely would have liked to see something. That didn’t happen, but I hope down the road that they can clean up the game a bit and keep stuff like that out of it. Players don’t want to see it and fans don’t want to see it either. There’s definitely no place for it.

First, I hope that Pacioretty continues to make a full recovery. Second, anyone who is tweeting him about embellishing his injury at this point is just misguided and not representative of the vast majority of Bruins fans. But, as was on full display in the Cup finals, teams like Vancouver (and Montreal) that actually do make it a practice to dive and feign catastrophic injury at the drop of a hat not only ultimately lose but are a disgrace and embarrassment to the sport. And I believe those tactics contribute to some of the lack of on-ice respect that exists in today’s game and leads to some of the serious injuries. Diving and embellishment has been Montreal’s MO in recent years, and it is likely why they have not been a serious Cup threat during that time. It is telling that players like Max Lapierre–a former Hab–lead that practice for the Canucks, and it was clear that the Refs had had enough and were not going to allow Vancouver to make a mockery of the game any longer, particularly given the stage and the tremendous level of TV interest.

The Bruins could easily have lost to Montreal in Round 1, as the Habs talent level is high and Price is very good. But as long as Montreal continues its shameless tactics, even if they get past the Bs in the playoffs going forward, I doubt they will be a serious Cup threat. And, unfortunately, injuries to their “Hab who cried wolf” players–even real injuries like Pacioretty’s–will still evoke an initial visceral reaction of skepticism.

Quite frankly, who gives a rat’s arse what he thinks,

  • anyonebutthehabs

this guy sucked before the hit and chances are he will next year i feel all these divers and whiners should have to play against the big z that will stop their diving 1 way or another and people wonder why hab fans are assholes maybe because their team is

  • BruinsFan

jaba, I couldn’t have said it any better!! Well done!! To Montreal’s credit…they are a talented team and may win it again one day, but the flopping around has to flop (I mean stop). Montreal’s play in the series reminded me of European soccer where flopping is part of the game (unfortunately). I’m a Bruins fan and it was embarrassing when I had to explain to my dad that this is not normal in the NHL. Why Montreal does it…I don’t know. Montreal always plays us well and I was nervous about that series (as I was with Philly, Tampa, and Vancouver). In the end, the Bruins just wanted to win it more through clean play and hard work. Sure, there were a few questionable hits here and there, but this is Hockey and if you compare the hits against those of the past you will see that today’s game is relatively clean. Hockey is a contact sport and people will get hurt. Pacioretty’s injury was a freak accident. Did Chara mean to check him hard? You bet he did. This is hockey!! Did he mean to hurt him? No way in hell. That’s not Chara’s game. It was a clean hit that tragically ended with a serious injury. If that stanchion wasn’t there Pacioretty wouldn’t have missed any time. It was simply a freak accident. Pacioretty and Montreal fans…stop being so bitter and get past it…you lost so move on and for a change be godd sports. Hopefully Pacioretty will be healthy next year and ready to skate. Best of luck in your recovery. Unfortunately, I have a feeling Montreal is not going to forget and will most likely be looking for blood the next time we face them. Before you try to injure one of our guys…go back and watch the video a 100 times until you realize that Chara’s hit was not intended to end that way. It’s obvious that it is nothing like Rome’s hit on Horton. No comparison except that both players ended up with severe concussions.

  • Mark Boese

No way twice the Habs could have beaten half the Bruins. Ask the other teams. Hell, the Flyers could have beaen the Habs. I think Pacioretty hurt his neck by shoving his head so far up his rear end.

  • zmbiewulf

Awwww, someone get the baby his binker :**(

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... Cfol44@yahoo.com

    MAX WHO???????

  • Downliner

I don’t think there was anything about Chara’s hit that deserved suspension. Pacioretti should be mad at his own team mates who did nothing after the hit. At no point in the game did any of the Montreal players go after Chara with any “real” intensity. And the reason is if any of them tried to go with Chara they would be out for the rest of the season.

  • skavoovied

    Sour grapes…

    too bad LOSER…

    Go Bruins!

  • ed banda

  • Larryboy

When are all these Habs & their fans goinhg to realize that a great goalie does not make them a great team. Without Price standing on his head most nights this team would not got close to the playoffs let alone win a cup. Keep dreaming its not going to happen

  • danzthaman

    See ya next year maxine!!!!

  • Zdeno

Man, you really must have hit your head hard Patches. It’s quite apparent you clowns lost 4 of 5 after the Bruins took the first two games off. When it was necessary, the B’s toyed with you delusional fucks. They didn’t even need a power play goal to beat you sadsacks. Patches, keep talking maybe someone will catch you along that post again this year.

  • Zdeno

but everyone who plays hockey knows that that’s an illegal play????????

The photo the media ignores clearly shows Charas hand no where near Patches head just milliseconds before he goes kaboom. From a high angle on the other side of the rink, it CLEARLY shows this. Any slight contact that may have been made by Charas hand would have come after contact.

Keep your head up Pacioretty, cause you can’t keep your mouth shut!

  • kanewolves

    Sore loser!!

  • Dawn

Most Bruins fans do not think that way. I do not like to see any player hurt. I have watched that play over and over again, and see nothing malicious about it. It was an unfortunate incidental accident. I saw no intentional hit to the head on Chara’s part.
I am sorry Max is hurt, but he neds to let it go, His team has done plenty of dirty plays.

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... Bomba

Chara is a big dude no matter what comes in contact with him, bottom line. I’ve said time after time I wouldn’t wanna be out there with him. Play the game. Don’t look for excuses as to why you got hurt. It’s hockey, you should know this! How long have u been playing. If u don’t know by now I’ll tell u what I tell my 9 year old son, head up. Know what’s going on. If there’s a monster on the ice you better be sure u know where he is at all times. Stop crying! I’m from Canada but live in Boston and am a huge fan. They do deserve it, wanna know why? Cause they are a team and played like one! So shame on u for being a pussy! Call your mom.

  • Tim Fisher

Like was said who actually gives a rats ass what Fagoretti or any Hab thinks.
The Bruins played great & beat the Canucks ( who are by the way a bunch of pussies & whiners, my god it was so obvious every game that they got there asses kicked ROYALLY) to win the STANLEY CUP which they well deserved. The Hab Fags would never have made it that far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Yee FRickin HA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://NetZero Bruins4ever

I don’t think cry babbies have the strength to carry the cup!!! Sore losers!!!

  • Dylanshack

Thats what happens when you play chicken with a train you dumbass. You shoulda bailed!

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... MM

No matter who wins the cup, there is always somebody who will bitch about things. The Bruins won, deal with it.
Nice to see the cup back after being gone for so many years.

  • Big Bad Bob

The Bruins were without Savard all year and Horton the last four games of the finals. It’s called having enough depth to cover injuries. Something the Bruins couldn’t do last year but could this year. Max can make all the excuses but the Bruins won!! To max: Olay Olay Olay Olaaay Olaaaaaay Olaaaaaay.

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... MarkSpacco

Well said Jaba, I agree 100%. I for one would like the NHL to start calling more penalties for diving that is the only way we are going to get it out of the game. Perhaps using instant reply to validate a penalty and or dive.

  • Hank Stanucci

    Max,
I agree with skavoovied…..full sour grapes.

  • Goonitup

People, we are listening to a HABS player and Habs fans. Please dont tap on the glass.. This montreal team just like the Vancouver team is SOFT. Remember when montreal had a chance to catch the Bruins the last week of the season in a Game at TD bank. What happened they tried to muck it up and cheap shot the Bruins and the Bruins beat them down like the red headed step child they are. Does 255 penalty minutes mean anything in that game. Sure it does because the Bruins then went on to score 7 goals and win 7-0. Lets compare teams. Goalies… Carey Price(the future) bad move should have kept Halak at least he can win a playoff series. You D…PK Subban(Not Yet) he’s gonna be good but in that devision he will get smeared and then his game will change. Patch good player big mouth. Ill campare him to Ken Linesmen or Brad Marchant except when patch is challenged he runs like a sissy and bangs his head on the wall. Gionta(old) Gomez(worn out) sorry your team is just SOFT and the BIG BAD BRUINS took it to you. Ill admit 7 games was a stretch for me I didnt think the habs had it in them but dont forget you still LOST and the BRUINS are 2011 Stanley Cup Champions.

  • Arthur

    Sounds like a good French Wine……….Go Bruins………

  • jfree781

I agree 100% with Dylanshack. Patch Adams should have bailed out of the play. Instead he tried to squeeze himself between a giant and the most dangerous area in the rink. All he had to do was ease up a bit, but he rolled the dice and ended up paying the price. Habs fans said Chara should have known where he was on the ice and not made any contact; well Patches should have known too, seeing as he was on his home ice. Chara did what any good defender would do and tried to rub him out to keep him from getting position on him. It was just unfortunate for the both of them that they were in that spot, because other wise there wouldn’t even have been a whistle.

  • Debbie

Who really cares what he has to say?
We won the cup, he didn’t end of story!

    What a sore LOSER!

  • patriotmarty12

I understand what he is saying, he is lamenting a missed chance and he has competive hate for our beloved Bruinz. I know I would not have wanted to watch Montreal hoist the cup, been there done that b4.That being said they are not that close to hoisting one anytime soon.

  • Cory D

    Boo Frickin’ Hoo!!

Please don’t play the “what if” crap. If your team could decide to get some size and D on the team, they could contend much better. But, like in the past, it’s offense, offense, offense.

Let’s ask the Washington Capitals about this…oh yeah…they were knocked out of the playoffs.

Great to rack up the goals but sad that you are wearing out a great goalie.

You can only ride Price’s coat tails for so long…

  • PAhockeyfan

WOW!!! You Bruins fans really know how to talk some s**t when you finally won something you haven’t had since ’72! The Bruins blogs I read during the Montreal series had you fans ready to hang Julien from the rafters and get rid of half your team. Now who won’t shut up…YOU DUMBF***S! You’ll be crying next spring when your “one and done”, just like your chocking Red Sux and N.E. Pantywastes!!!

  • Jason9

Wow, the comments here like those of jaba and Bruinsfan reinforce what Pacioretty said: “It definitely shows the type of fans that Boston Bruins fans are”. Continuously accusing Montreal of diving and embellishment without any merit to these claims shows how biased they are against the Habs. Maybe it’s the inferiority complex that’s built up over decades of losing to them? Or maybe some kind of underlying racism towards French Canadians? Whatever it is it should stop. Now that Boston has won they should learn to be good winners to respect their opponents, instead of continuing to make unfounded and reprehensible accusations, like Recchi did before against Pacioretty. I wonder if the Bruins fans will ever learn, but I’m not holding my breath.

  • PAhockeyfan

Your right Jason9, typical Boston fans. Run your mouth when you win, disappear when you lose. The last couple years I saw alot of empty seats when the Bruins weren’t winning. Everytime I watch a game in Montreal it’s sold out! When I see one of their road games there’s a s**tload of their jerseys in the stands! That shows me the Montreal fans have 100% more class and hockey knowledge than the idiots in BASTAN. Yeah, learn how to talk, morons!

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... gordon

Wow not surprising rhetoric from a person from a city where everybody lives in poverty

  • SST John

Response to PAhockeyfan : Boston is a true hockey town. But just like a lot (not all) of other cities many fans refuse to pay a weeks pay to go to a game. I, personally, have not gone to a game since I went to Bourque’s final home game. There are just too many other more important things to spend money on. BUT I watch all the games on tv as well as the games on versus and network. They will always get 13-15000 regardless. But the other few thousand will only pay when they win (those are the pink hatters) most of the other true fans are still priced out. As far as the Canadian Diving Team goes, they have awesome fans, its the organization wide antics that people hate.

  • PAhockeyfan

Hey gordon, Pa. is a state – not a city. I don’t live in poverty, thank you very much. I’ve been to Boston and you have your problems too – every city does! Thank you for proving how ignorant you are that you think you’re better than everyone else. Typical.
