Peter Chiarelli on Tomas Kaberle: ‘We weren’t able to reach common ground’

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli didn’t want to spend much of Joe Corvo‘s introductory conference call discussing the loss of Tomas Kaberle, but did admit that there was a connection between the B’s losing their puck-mover to Carolina and trading for the man he replaced on the Hurricanes.

“They are connected to a certain degree,” Chiarelli said. “We had some talks with Tomas and with his agent. I think one of the stumbling blocks was term, and I can completely respect why Tomas would want some form of term. We weren’t able to reach common ground in that respect, and I’ve been nibbling at this opportunity for a bit to acquire Joe. It came down to maybe Carolina was going to sign Tomas.”

The Hurricanes inked Kaberle to a three-year, $12.75 million deal, meaning he did not take a pay cut from the $4.25 million cap hit over the course of his previous deal. Corvo is in the final year of his current contract, and the 34-year-old will carry a $2.25 million cap hit.

Corvo has played with two members current members of the Bruins in center Chris Kelly (Senators) and fellow blueliner Dennis Seidenberg (Hurricanes). He had 40 points with the Hurricanes last year.

“At this point in my career, this is just an excellent opportunity to win and have a chance to win,” he said. “I couldn’t be more happy.”

Joe Corvo is a much safer, sound defensive player with determination and physical ability. His scoring touch and puck moving equals Kaberle .Joe will fit right into a Bruins style,,,Kaberle avoids contact,,,,can’t wait for Bruins to PLASTER him in first Cane’s game this fall.Kaberle showed his “freeloading ability”for a cup ring without too much effort.I’d be ashamed to go back to Boston if I were him,,,cowardly at best.Too bad Bruins gave up Colborne for a freeloader,,only bad move by PC so far,,,CAN’t win em all.My feel is that Bruins are a better team without Kaberle and Corvo on board,,You’l see in October,,,GO BRUINS,,,Go Joe,,,show’em

I like this acquisition and I think the Bruins were wise not to invest in Kaberle what Carolina was willing to give him. What I don’t agree with is the band-wagon dumping on Kaberle that Rey above represents.

If you watched the B’s all season – there was a major difference between how the B’s moved the puck after the acquisition of Kaberle – and not just on the PP, but at even strength.

He wasn’t yet a prototypical Bruin – but either was Horton when he arrived. We don’t know how much more Kaberle would have brought to the Bruins if he had the chance to go through training camp and a complete season with them. He got much better throughout the playoffs.

Blaming Kaberle for the poor powerplay is just jumping on a media bandwagon by simpletons who watch about 10 hockey games a season.

In the end – Kaberle got a better deal than Boston could have offered him because they have to be careful about their cap for next year with all the FAs coming due. And at least they have picked up a competent defenseman for the year – while the young talent in Providence continues to mature for the season after.

I’m looking forward to next season!
