Steven Kampfer OK with being left off the Cup 09.28.11 at 2:45 pm ET

Three games, or even one game, is how close Steven Kampfer came to qualifying for his name to be on the Stanley Cup. With players having to play in either 41 regular-season games or one Stanley Cup finals game, Kampfer, who played 38 regular season games before becoming the team’s seventh defensemen last season and eventually being injured in Providence prior to the playoffs, ended up on the list of players the B’s had to petition for.

The powers that be heard the Bruins’ case, but unlike Marc Savard (25 games played), Kampfer did not end up getting his name on the trophy.

The second-year defenseman said after Wednesday’s practice that he was initially surprised that he wasn’t on the Cup, but that an explanation from general manager Peter Chiarelli helped.

“At first, yeah, but after talking to Peter, it was kind of understandable why I wasn’t,” Kampfer said of his initial surprise. “The background of only playing a year in the league, and how Savvy got on.

“It’s one of those things where I guess I’ll always be linked with the team here. I was here for three quarters of the year, so I just missed it by three games, but you’re part of the team, you celebrate it with the team, you still get your day with the Cup. It’s something that was exciting, and it gives you that hunger to go win again.”

Kampfer is currently battling to make the Bruins out of camp this year, competing with Matt Bartkowski for the seventh defenseman spot.

Everybody who put the B’s uniform on during thre year had a hand in the success and should have their names on that cup. 38 games and Kampfer isn;t on it? Ridiculous.

Its kinda of ridiculous that kampfer doesn’t get his name on the cup. But Trent Whitfield does. That’s some straight up bs.

The “powers that be’ should not “be” if that is the way they treat a player
who played 38 games for the Bruins. It should be up to the players themselves and NO ONE else. Typical, give a “little” man a lot of power and he will use it to hurt someone just to show he can!!

    Paul,

Thanks for reading. Whitfield did not get his name on the Cup. You need to play 41 regular-season games or one Cup finals game. Hope this clears up any confusion!

Well, I’m not alright with it. The kid played very well for us and played a part in us winning key games. I certainly thought that Claude should have had Kampfer in some of the Finals games, instead of that cigar-store Indian, Kaberle. There is no logical basis for adding Savvy to the Cup and not Kampfer. Both were out due to injury. Their respective NHL experience levels are wholly irrelevant. I think the Bruins organization needs to fight this much harder than they have.

This is really lame. I totally agree rather have Kampfers name on there vs Kaberle. Buddy Holly want complain though. moron.
