Claude Julien felt Brad Marchand was protecting himself 01.07.12 at 5:24 pm ET
By DJ Bean

While the big question Saturday regarding a possible suspension surrounds Bruins forward Milan Lucic, he isn’t the only Bruins’ left wing who could be in trouble with the league.

Brad Marchand was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for clipping Canucks defenseman Sami Salo in the Bruins’ zone in the second period of Saturday’s loss to Vancouver. Marchand got low when Salo came in to hit him, and what resulted was a dangerous play that Kevin Bieksa said should get Marchand suspended.

A fired-up Bruins coach Claude Julien defended Marchand following the game, saying he was protecting himself from what could have been a dangerous hit.

“We all have our opinions on what is going on with the game and the hits and everything else,” Julien said after the game. “All I’m going to tell you is that I always told my players that they need to protect themselves. The last thing I want my players to do is get hit and then end up with a concussion, and they have to protect themselves. Whether it’s the right way or the wrong way, it’ll depend on how the league looks at it.

“I’d rather have a guy take a two-minute penalty than turn his back to the play, stand up straight, and then get his face knocked into the glass and be out for maybe the rest of the year with a concussion, or maybe end his career like [Marc] Savard. So I think we have to really look at those kinds of things. In my opinion, if guys start protecting themselves the way Marchand did, maybe guys will stop taking runs at other guys because that’s the consequences you end up paying for taking runs at guys, too. Who knows where we’re going to go with this. I know we’re all trying hard to fix that part of the game, but it’s still there, and it’s still not fixed.”

how the hell is taking someone out at the knees “protecting your self”? 4-5 games should be warranted here

  • Bob_humperdink

Claude Julien is lying scumbag and a disgrace for a professional coach that protects dirty players like Marchand.

Marchand should just let Salo take a run at Beads head instead. Canucks are a bunch of wussy fairies. They got what they deserved.

Watch the replay genius. Does he even make contact with his knees? No. Back of his legs, clearly above the knees. Moronic call, just like the one on Lucic.

Canucks are sandy-ginas ….. From sedin quietly finding his way to the safety of his bench while his team mates tried to fight, to the gay “challenge” and subsequent chickenshit backdown they’re cowardice is humiliating. They won the game, but I don’t know how they can hold their head up. Jesus, what do they say to the kids who see that spineless behavior? If you’re going to hit your opponent with your stick, or trip, or whatever, expect an vass vwhipping or be ready to give one.

Watch the tape …. Except look this time. I know its embarrassing when your 6’3 guy is taken vout by the smallest player on the Bruins roster, but it wasn’t the knees, and if u were as smart or as good, you would have saved yourself the same way.

Could someone explain to me why when a Canuck does the exact same thing, it’s called a “hip check”?

I dare anyone to find a difference.
I have really no problem with the game otherwise, the Bruins lost and it was their own fault they lost… which actually doesn’t even bother me that much because they still pushed around those whiners.  The only things that really bothered me were the fact that:
1.)  They kept hanging Thomas out to dry with bad penalties.
2.)  Somehow that apparent hip-check by Marchand was a game misconduct and 5-minute major all of a sudden.

And finally, Bob, you complete tool, please explain to me why pathetic whiners such as yourself conveniently forget all of the dirty players EVERY GODDAMN TEAM IN THE LEAGUE has had and WILL have over the course of their lifetime?
All you can hope is that your instigator, rat, or squirrel doesn’t end someone’s career, or Stanley Cup appearance, for example.

    You twit.

  • Sick o punk bitshs

Please, Boston is the dirtiest team in the league. Lucic is the sort of small cocked bitsh that smacks his woman around. Big surprise he also throws punches at the back of opponents heads(we all remember how well that worked for punk vass bertuzzi). Chara has one move: the cross check. He can’t skate can’t stick handle. That anyone would defend Marchand is reprehensible, this guy is a waste of air. Cheap players of this ilk(see Matt Cooke) should not be allowed to earn NHL money while they continually show zero respect for the health and safety of others.

hahaha some of these posts are hilarious seriously.  Brad Marchand is and always will be a little rat faced weesle.  To say that he hit salo to protect himself is ridiculous.  Youre all talking about how the canucks are a bunch of fairies.  How about a guy who is so afraid of getting hit that he has to drop to his knees to avoid it.  Give your heads a shake and watch the replay again.  Funny how boston has a problem with teams playing the game that they like to play.  Reverse the situation make that burrows in the long faced giant chara and sky would be falling in been town.  Dont even try to deny it.
