Peter Chiarelli: Brad Marchand asked league for clarification this fall on low hits 01.09.12 at 7:14 pm ET
By DJ Bean

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued the following statement after Brad Marchand was given a five-game suspension for his hit on Canucks defenseman Sami Salo:

“While we respect the process that the Department of Player Safety took to reach their decision regarding Brad’s hit on Sami Salo, we are very disappointed by their ruling.

“While we understand that the Department of Safety is an evolving entity, it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.

“It is equally disappointing that Brad sought the counsel of the Department this past Fall for an explanation and clarification regarding this type of scenario so as to adjust his game if necessary. He was advised that such an incident was not sanctionable if he was protecting his own safety. Given our feeling that Brad was indeed protecting himself and certainly did not clip the player as he contacted the player nowhere near the knee or quadricep, today’s ruling is not consistent with what the Department of Player Safety communicated to Brad.”

2 typicial idiot bruin comments… one from Chiarelli, one from ‘takadivecanuck’

A thinly veiled threat, much like AV’s inappropriate inflammatory and hopefully league dealt with comments. Practice what you preach and don’t use the media to try and manipulate the league in its decision making. Be a man Marchand and admit you hate Vancouver, and intentionally took out Salo with a cheap illegal hit. What Chara is you captain, you are just following his example of not admitting taking a player out. Cowards all round in the NHL.

Its tough to listen to Bruins magament try and defend this cheap hit.  It is not what I as a long time Bruins fan, Bostonian and player want to see from the team that represents our blue collar heritage and the way the game should be played.  Cheap shots are for cowards, Marchand has heart and skill, it is sad to see him become this.

It’s not even an illegal hit (played hockey for 40 years in us and canada).  he keeps his feet and hits above the knees.  you can find a identical hits by raymond and ballard if you cruise the utube for 30 seconds and no one complains then.  it’s cause the bruins wear black i guess.

no different from football where one guy get’s lower than the other.  players just don’t expect it, that’s why it works.

the only real complaint is that salo did not have the puck, but neither guy was coming in to play the puck.

i have never seen a 5 on 1 fight before.  now that is funny and i don’t understand why we are not hearing about that from league.  imagine if 5 bruins attacked a canuck..!

There was nothing cheap about the hit.  Just further evidence of the wussification of sport.

It is very disturbing to learn that Marchand talked to Shanny BEFORE the season to find out HOW LOW HE CAN GO…..literally and figuratively……with regards to LOW HITS….I sense more and longer suspensions for THE RAT …..
