Tim Thomas issues statement on why he skipped White House 01.23.12 at 6:50 pm ET
By DJ Bean

Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas issued the following statement Monday on why he chose not to attend the White House with his teammates:

“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

“This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”

    Tim Thomas for President!

  • Guest

Good for Tim. Free speech is a right and a responsibility, and he made a respectful statement with his words and actions. More Americans should follow his lead and take a stand on the state of our government, pro or con, and do so in a way that doesn’t disrespect anyone else.

  • BOB

You get invited to the White House you go TIm  !!  Lost all respect for you !!  Your a God Damm American ???

  • Libertarian

Tim, thank you for standing up for what you believe.  Don’t listen to the lemmings in both parties.  They are both authoritarian, just about different things.  True freedom is priceless and I applaud you for making a stand!

  • Mike

Bob, clearly your respect didn’t mean all that much. Respect for the Constitution is American, bowing down to a President who thinks himself royalty is not.

  • http://www.planetjohnny.net Johnny

    Occupy the Crease!

  • Eastwood320

Timmy, well said.  Great to see an athlete take a stand on the positive side of an important issue.

  • jerry

would  you  do  the  same  if  they  needed  you  to  fight.  not  go to  war   but  you  can  take   all  the  big money   you make  with the  bruins….. are  you  sore  your  in  a different  tax  bracket………………..  your the  loser tim  not   america…

  • Anonymous

He is an idiot.  It wasn’t a political invitation, but just a politeness extended by the White House and whoever was president.  He obviously doesn’t have the brainpower to say what solutions he envisioned nor would we care to listen to them.

  • Chris

    Way to go Tim!

  • Howard5670

TT, love your ability and happy you won the cup as well. You’re right, you do have the option to not go, you’re an American and you can do what you want. Since I am also an American I am going to voice my opinion as well. You made a bad call not going. Part of winning a championship is going to the WH and meet the most powerful man in the world, like him or not. Your team was invited, last time I looked you were still a Bruin. Bad call again, you will regret not going one day which is a shame. Once again just my opinion, wish I could have taken your place!

  • Jman

I applaud Tim also. The Left is ruining this country.

  • Juliebaker2

    I so agree Tim Thomas.

  • Teixeira1225

when has he EVER claimed to be royalty? go ahead..i’ll wait

  • Rene

Is this guy kidding!?  I find it dissrespectful, and furthermore,  he may want to remind himself if is this great country of ours that afforded him the opportunity to turn his talent/job into a windfall. Ungrateful!

  • Teixeira1225

Do you honestly believe that Tim Thomas didn’t go to the White House because of his disdain towards BOTH parties? Highly doubtful…Mr. Thomas needs to grow up..incredibly ignorant.

  • BootNewt

Way to go Tim!!!! Did Glenn Beck right your statement? You FRAUD!

  • Hast T57911

    Bob ur a jackass….

  • Brianvscalese

I love TT for this move, and so many more reasons…

  • PAuerb3022

Despicable — I’m sure lots of players on other championship teams hated that idiotic, warmonger, economy-wrecking George W. Bush, but they still showed up at the White House.  It’s OK to disagree with the President, but what Thomas did was to disrespect the office of the President.  He just came down several pegs in my book.  Be honest with yourselves, you right-wing drooling idiots who are congratulating Thomas:  what would you have thought if one of the 2007 Champion Red Sox behaved this way when Bush was President?

  • Lethalband

I salute you Tim Thomas , good call my freind ,not only are you one of the best hockey players ,but also a true American ,they haven’t taken away our freedom of speech ,,,,,,,yet

  • Bmac212012

To bad the governments save percentage couldn’t be as high as Tim Thomas

  • Nate

Way to go Tim!  Politically, you certainly get it.

  • Bruinsfan

Tim I have no problem with your political position or beliefs. Right, wrong or indifferent. Everyone has a right to free speech as well as life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

Your presence at the Whitehouse wasn’t requested because of your party line.

You should have seen it as a request from the organization you wear on your sweater, your coach and most importantly your team mates!

You let your team and your coach down. Not attending as a member of the TEAM is inexcusable IMO.

There is not “I” in TEAM.

    Unfortunately “POLITICS” has a few.

Please put your passion back on the ice doing what you do best and get back to being a team player

  • Deucegoos

Timmy, Timmy, Timmy. Good for you. Representing the very small portion of the population that won’t be hearded like sheep.

  • FreddieP

I believe the delusional brain of Tim Thomas has grown out of control. What a DB.

  • Grayesun

Well stated TT…after what you’re used to facing…you can handle any cheap shots coming at you with eyes closed and no mask…stand tall, the truth has no agenda

  • Blackyb

Way to go Tim Thomas. I respect you and T-Bow. You stand up for what you believe in and they are good things.  We are proud of you.  BlackyB

  • Blackyb

We all know it was political, who are you trying to kid. Obama does nothing that is not calculated, even his vacations.

  • Blackyb

This great country of ours has nothing to do with Obama. So quit trying to associate this country’s greatness with Obama and diminish Tim Thomas’ talent. Everyone knows what is going on and a few who are benefiting from Obamaism are the ones who are trying to get him re-elected. Tim Thomas does not need to ride Obama’s coat tails to fame. Obama needs to ride our coat tails to have a job while he and his henchmen are trying to change what has made this country great and give it away to people who have not earned their right to have as much. There are many who deserve chances, but they are in a different league than those who want something for nothing or to distribute wealth and tell people how to talk, what to eat, how to look, who to vote for and turn this country into a social experiment.

  • Bamck603

actually that is not true. Rasheed Wallace skipped out on the White House visit when Bush was in office. “That’s not my President” and also he made it clear it was about the government, not the president.

  • Blackyb

It is a free country. We should not break bread with those who are trying to destroy us. This is not disrespect to the White House, it is respect for himself and Our America.

  • Blackyb

Actions speak louder than words. He does not have to claim or proclaim.

  • Blackyb

How is that that he will regret. A man only regrets when he goes against his own conscious. Tim did what is right.

  • BrazilianFan

TT, this makes my admiration level for you grow even more. Your statement was not disrespectful by any means and you just stood up for what you believe is right. You are awesome, as an athlete and as an individual. Congratulations

  • BL

I am a vet and wouldnt go to the WH. Being a ‘god dam American’ means I have that right.

  • Travicane

Idiot! – Did you read the post. Can you actually read!

  • Travicane

    What Drivel!
Thomas is on the Bruins team because of his talents as an athlete, not because of his political beliefs.  That should not diminish his right to to use his intellect to reject something that he finds repellent.

His statement is a simple, clear, and intelligent (no RahRa bullsit), consistent with his first and second amendment rights. He correctly defined the problem as systemic, not partisan.

Mr Thomas should be able to use his passion for wherever he thinks it is needed as a responsible American.  I do not see how that would detract in any way from his Athletic pursuits.

  • G Travicane

Nonsense -every invitation that comes from the White House, Senate, or Congress is Political.  Thank god it is not yet a command, with penalties if you do not comply.

IT WAS VERY MUCH a POLITICAL INVITATION (command?)

Some political entity asking/requiring your corporate master to have you appear on demand to support some sort of agenda that you may not believe in.

He obviously has the brainpower to reject this while exercising his constitutional rights with a well reasoned response.

    You are the idiot!

  • Frank

    It’s you’re, not your.

  • Jboucher2011

Awesome Tim…. Now just come up with a pose to go along with it so we can replace that damn “tebowing” crap!

  • TheTruth

What a douche bag you are Thomas.  You’ve failed your team spectacularly.

  • Mll

Don’t forget…He was (I believe) the only (or maybe there were two on team) AMERICANS on the team! I salute Tim for sticking with his OWN values, objectives, and decisions. His natural sense of DEFENSE  and understanding what truly “GUARDING” his really about. On the ice, and off. He is the perfect “Guardsman” for a little thing called The United States Constitution. Glad this Tank is on the side of US….The AMERICANS.

  • Mike

When he has ruled by decree. When he has ignored the Congress, and involved the US in Libya. When he has subverted the Constitution.

  • Mike

Do you not see the flaw here?

The idea that the President is “the most powerful man in the world” is the reason that Thomas did not go.

The President was never intended by those that created the office to wield the kind of power he has today. Never.

  • Greenwood63

There is sooooo much wrong with his statement. How is Tim Thomas being oppressed by the Federal Government?

  • SMALLGOV

    Are you a G.D. COMMUNIST?

  • SMALLGOV

    Are you a G.D. COMMUNIST?

  • Greenwood63

How is Tim Thomas’s property being taken away by the Federal Government. He’s rich is he not?

  • luvdatdirtywata

Tim Thomas is my hero. He speaks for those of us who don’t have a public voice, and has the courage to stand up for what he believes. Do people speak out against Susan Sarandon for her liberal tirades, when she disrespected a Republican President? Jane Fonda, for those old enough to remember “Hanoi Jane”? Most of the posts against Tim here are not about his decision to make a statement, but about the message he chose to send and the method he chose to deliver it. Would it have been better if he met the President, extended his hand and said “I disagree with you and all that you stand for, I will fight you with my words and actions and I hope and pray you are defeated in November.”?

Actually, I guess it would have!

  • Tom

I love Tim Thomas as a goal tender and a Bruin, but his judgement here is flawed.  Yes he has a right to protest what is going wrong in this country, but he picked the wrong venue.  This was an invitation from the office of the President of the USA, not the individual occupying that office.  He should have gone in respect for the Office and found a different time and place to make his feelings, that I agree with, known.

  • etchgirl

    Well said BL!!!

  • Jmacdonald

Watch the language, Bob. TT was both right and courageous.  If you removed your leftie blinders you would recognize that Obama is destroying the country, the one “blessed” by God for more than two centuries.
Nitwits like yourself are nothing but enablers.  Have a good day.

  • etchgirl

How did he let his teammates down?  Haven’t heard them complain.  When did an invitation become a demand?  When did we earn the right to judge anybody?

  • Jmacdonald

Hey Bootnewt, why don’t you go back to school and learn how to spell?  I have always known that all of the illiterate cretins were with Obama.

  • dmd

Tim Thomas is narrow minded and selfish..

  • Troy

You lost all credibility at “right-wing drooling idiots.”

  • etchgirl

50% of the American players chose NOT TO GO!  +/- 1% – hmmm……..

  • Stephen

Couldn’t agree with you more Tim. Thank you for standing up for our constitution. If more Americans would do the same we wouldn’t have these clowns in office.

  • Greenwood63

I don’t have a problem with Tim Thomas speaking his mind and not going to the White House. I just think he should have clarified that the 3 branches of the federal government primarily work to protect and further enrich the wealthy 1% of this country and to impoverish most everyone else.

  • Greenwood63

For example, why shouldn’t we all get the same beneficial tax treatment as someone like Mitt Romney?

  • etchgirl

just wondering….why should he have had to explain his decision to decline at all?

  • Greenwood63

He shouldnt have to you’re right. It’s just that he’s a celebrity so he gets put in the spotlight and is provided a forum for his views.

  • Pollardandrea52

I couldn’t agree more with your statement Tim! Future presidential candidate?!!

  • Wmtheconqueror

    SO BE IT !

  • Peartfan40

What the hell are you talking about? What does his not going to the white house have to do with taxes or war?

  • Peartfan40

I find it funny that people are outraged over Tim’s decision to decline the White House invitation. Who cares if he chose not to go? It’s his right. What does it matter to any of you?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WCZKCA3TSZTK5NTWFE42NIOSAQ jonathans

Hey Tim, here’s a clue: most of us don’t give a flying F what you “think”.

  • Burtonride

You’re f*cking pathetic man, seriously. You really think that you not going makes a difference? that you’re “taking a stand?” I hate to pull you out of your fantasy land, but the white house gives ZERO F*CKS. Some chump goalie trying to pull the free citizen card. Wake up. You want to “take a stand,” why not quit hockey and do something that makes a difference.

  • Burtonride

oh and also- hate to break it to you cuz it might rock your world: The founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they knew what Americans pull with their “constitutional rights.” Also here’s some literature on your founding fathers. Might want to find different role models: http://bit.ly/xG3AJU

  • Hoover1957

    right on tim

  • Paulmarchetti

Tim Thomas is a GREAT American!  Being an American he has the right to voice his opinion! Isn’t that one of the things that makes this a great country!? All this about “he should have waited until after the Washington trip was over” he didn’t issue a statement until he was bombarded by the media! He told the truth and spoke his mind (which differs from what a lot of people would have done and differs from their political party alliances) that’s the REAL problem here, plain and simple :) Tim Thomas is a CLASS ACT and a Real American!  Oh and by the way 2010-2011 season No Tim Thomas would have = No Stanley Cup! Like to see the Bruins as a team and organization that claims to be so committed to each other STAND UP FOR THEIR TEAMMATE AND FRIEND!

  • Guest

    Tim Thomas rules!

  • markpass

He must be a commie dick head…very unAmerican.
Forget the politics, when you get invited to the White House to meet the pres. you go no matter your politics.

  • Janicetaglieri

The sad part of this, is he is RIGHT!!!!  I have no issues with him not going, why go put on a fake face, and go just to please others!!!!  Him going to the White House has nothing to do with his proformance on the ice!!!!

  • Janicetaglieri

He is an American, an a honest one at that.  I gained even more repect for him, because he is not affaid to stand up for what he believes.  Having the freedom to make that chioce is what America is about!

  • Hikertrash

i think you took too many pucks in the head

  • guest

his stand must really bother you .. why didn’t the pres invite the cards

  • Capt Janson

The gov. doesn’t support us, we support them, and at 25% we cann’t afford them. We can’t afford to continue borrowing from China or anyone else to do this.
