Tim Thomas posted another thing on Facebook

Tim Thomas is back on Facebook offering his thoughts. (AP)

BUFFALO — Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas took to Facebook again Wednesday to express his political views.

Thomas posted the following on Wednesday:

I Stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom.

‘In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.’
– by Martin Niemöller, prominent German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor, best known as the author of the poem First they came….

Thomas famously posted his reasoning for not visiting the White House on his Facebook page last month, and has used Facebook to post messages and quotes.

Once again Saint Thomas is 100% correct. I also stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom.

  • Rachel Goldblatt

Is this a reference to the government forcing catholic health services to contraception? If so, I’m all for the right to religious freedom, however, as a descendant of both holocaust survivors and non-survivors, I find the comparison in very poor taste. I hope for Timmy’s sake that someone hacked into his FB while he was eating a cheeseburger because this will not win him many fans in Boston.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Perry/644151358 David Perry

Because he said “Jew” it’s about the Holocaust?  He mentioned Commies, Unions, Catholics, etc.  He is talking about the entire take over of Germany and march through Europe, set into motion by ill conceived laws by the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and others that ALLOWED a twisted, power hungry Dictator to march onward.

  • Guest

Yea the Nazi Germany comparison is ridiculous and offensive. I wish everyone would just agree to not bring Hitler and the Nazis into little political squabbles. It’s always inappropriate and unwarranted.

The USA is based on freedom. Freedom of many things and one of those things is freedom of speech. Another is freedom of religion. I don’t really care if Tim Thomas visited the White House and I like the fact that he stands by his beliefs and did not let the “masses” persuade him otherwise. The quote he used was a perfect fit. He is using it to show that instead of turning a blind eye to governmental hypocrisy regarding these freedoms, he is standing up and chose to stay home for his causes.

No one is being forced to birth control.  get off your soap box.  I could see if people were being forced to use contraceptives it would be good stand, but no is forcing anything, they are being provided the option.  Use your ‘religious freedoms’ by abstaining from taking a pill.

  • Chrisjerome37

it happened, bottom line just because you don’t want to hear isn’t going to make it go away. Thomas is dead on, he should be commended for standing up for his beliefs, not having to defend his decision.

  • Samhorn74

Interestingly, the conservatives he stands with have gone pretty hard against the Unionists.

  • Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand

I wonder if these Catholic churches accept Federal funding.  Anyone know this?  If so, would Timmy T protest that US tax dollars are being distributed to hospitals, period?  You take someone’s money with strings attached, you abide so sayeth The Dude.

  • ALAN FECTEAU

    WEEI:

In the words former president Ronald Reagan … “There he goes again.” :-)

Looks like we won’t have to wait for summer, and offers from Super-PAC ads.

We know right now that the decision by Tim Thomas to skip the White House photo-op had been a partisan political act — despite his words on Facebook to the contrary.  I didn’t believe those words then, and I certainly don’t believe them now.

Having said all that …  Tim Thomas is perfectly entitled to his partisan politics.  If he wants to make them public, then that’s fine with me, too.  I didn’t agree with Curt Schilling’s politics either.  But he had, and still has, every right to them, and to make them public, just like anyone else.

The only question, in my mind, is exactly how much the appropriate Super-PAC will be willing to pay Thomas for his upcoming 30-second commercial, which will most certainly be run in northern Michigan.  What will the issue be?  What will he say?

    Let’s try this one –

“Hi, I’m Tim Thomas, NHL goaltender, from northern Michigan.  Since my bold stand last winter against the big government free-spending ways of Washington, I’ve been subjected to numerous vicious liberal attacks.  I won’t say what they were … but man, they were vicious!!

Anyway, we need to get rid of Obama right now.  If that man gets another four years, then it’s just a matter of time before he comes after our guns, and make us catch deer with condoms instead.”

Will all this stuff be a distraction to the Bruins?  Who knows?  The Red Sox managed to win the World Series in 2004, despite Schilling’s statements in support of George W. Bush.

On the other hand, a few years back, NFL owners understandably did not want Rush Limbaugh — as a fellow owner/co-owner of the St. Louis Rams — simply because NFL owners did not want to put themselves in a position to answer for what Limbaugh says everyday.

So, just like Florida 2000 … too close to call !! :-)

WHO CARES?! As long as he stands for the protection of his net, I could care less what he does off the ice.

Goes to show us Tim Thomas is up on other issues. Is that so wrong? Maybe if Tim used a

little Wisdom, he would not have to explain anything. Zip it, and play hockey.

  • Djbeanisabafoon

CAN HE STOP ALREADY? I MEAN, I LOOK AT HIM COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY NOW, AND NOT IN POSITIVE LIGHT. I WANT HIM GONE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.sicard1 Mike Sicard

He certainly has the right in the US to say what he thinks and who am I to judge where he stands on things. I don’t agree with him, but the beauty of the US is that he has the right to say what he thinks whether people agree with him or not. The worst thing about this is all this politics has really killed my taste for watching the Bruins. I hate when celebrities kill the fun with either politics or money.

  • Rbern11162

He is right , the truth hurts sometimes.

  • Katiana Charming

Very relevant and honest quote. There is no reason to be offended. While Martin Niemoller may have been referring to the taking over of Germany by the Nazi movement, Thomas is using it here as a way of comparing what happened there to what’s occurring here; a slow elimination of our individual and Constitutional rights. This is just a single example, and as proven by many comments here, it doesn’t effect them so they don’t care and are annoyed by the fact that Thomas is openly speaking against it. Well consider the fact that next may be our right to bear arms, or our right to due process…will you care then? It’s a ripple-effect and it starts small and by time people wake up and realize what’s going on, it’s usually too late.

However, if nothing else people should at least respect the fact that he’s standing up for his views, and voicing his opinion. People are entitled to their opinion and voice it every day and just because we don’t always agree with each other doesn’t mean we have to disrespect each other. So whether you agree with Thomas or not it should
not effect your love or respect for his skills as a goaltender, the
Bruins, or the game. And if it does, that’s pretty immature and narrow minded thinking on your part. Plus you’ll miss some good hockey.

    Go Bruins!

  • Kim

Maybe Thomas should zip it up before the nhl or the nhlpa tells him. Concentrate on being a professional athlete. Hmmm 6-0 for the sabres in tonights game with the bruin’s goons losing it – NOT A DIRTY TEAM just a bunch of POOR LOSERS!!!

Women are the ones who are F ed …I believe every woman should have Rights to her own uterus…if she wants to use birth control that  is up to her…Men stay the F out of it.

  • Mcohiphop

This has nothing to do with religious freedom. You are free to practice any religion you wish.  Use of Government funding based on Government health care plans has nothing to do with religion.  I used to look up to the United States growing up, now I’m glad I’m not a part of it.

Keep religion out of the government.  Or you can have it, just remember to have prayer available to Yaweh, Zeus, Odin, Shiva, and the hundreds of other deities.  Freedom of religion right? So ignorant and arrogant.

I am seriously thinking Tim Thomas has concussive syndrome and it is affecting his brain…how else does someone believe the s.h…t…he is spouting…and he is a  follower of Glenn Beck who was too insane for Fox News…

  • Lucciocuz

Tim is correct.  Evil doesn’t trumpet it’s arrival.  It just crawls through society and suddenly you have a dictator instead of a president.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1015169099 Gregoire Bedard

He is mistaken. He says “Catholics” as in individuals. There are no individuals having their religious freedom suppressed in any way whatsoever. Offering access to contraception is not the same. They aren’t being told they need to use it themselves. The Institutions are using this attack so they can force their morals on others.

  • http://twitter.com/ltcmiked Mike Donahue

It’s not always inappropriate or unwarranted.  Thomas wasn’t equating Obama to Hitler, he was using the failure of people to stand up to Nazism as an example of how not to act in the face of an oppressive government.

So by your logic we should draw no lessons from Nazi Germany?  We shouldn’t recognize that people did nothing in the face of evil and therefore make a concerted effort to not allow that to happen again?

All Thomas did was confirm what Edmund Burke said “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Do not allow evil to triumph. Do not do sit by and do nothing.”

Thomas was pointing out that he won’t be one of those good  men who did nothing to stop wrongdoing … it’s a lesson that’s appropriate.

Gregoire, you’re right, the individual is not being force to take it. However, the Catholic church is being  forced to offer it. Be it the individual, or the church, being force to offer something that clearly goes against their religious teaching is unconstitutional. If Jews were forced to offer non-kosher food because it would benefit the health of their children, would you not see that as over reaching by the Govt? It’s the same thing!

  • ALAN FECTEAU

    WEEI:

There are always many things we can always learn from the evils of Nazi Germany … mostly we can remind ourselves we have a real-live Constitution, and they never did … :-)

So our man Tim Thomas, and others, need to wipe the foam, and relax.  We have a Constitution.  And no church is being required to do anything.  Our Constitution protects churches.

This department rule at issue here states that if there is a business — not a church — a business, that chooses to offer health insurance, then that business must offer a plan that includes access to birth control.  And of course, if the customer doesn’t want the birth control, the customer can turn down that part of the coverage.

The issue comes up when there is a business that is AFFILIATED with a church — such as Catholic-associated hospitals, or Catholic-associated insurance companies.  What some states with similar rules have done has been to allow the religious-affiliated business to “opt-out” of the rule, and instead require the business to simply refer the customer, to other insurance pools, that offer that kind of coverage, if the customer wants that coverage.

And that’s probably what will happen here at the end of the day … that is, after the politicians and pressure groups, on all sides of the issue, are done fund-raising off it … :-)

  • Really_33

    Tim, stop, please.

BTW,  what did the church do while the nazis were rounding up everyone….

and the Catholics , he means the Church, a huge percentage of catholics use contraceptives,  over 90%….So that’s where Catholics stand on this issue.

Trade this guy already.  The only American on this team and he is making me sick.

  • Parcells822

Why dont we all simply say what this is all about–TIM THOMAS IS RACIST AND NOT TOO HAPPY AN AFRICAN AMERICAN IS PRESIDENT.  Hey Thomas dont worry Obama is no Adolph.   Thomas you are an idiot–stick to the only thing you know how to do–stopping black pucks.

  • Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand

Is the Church (hospital) being forced to take Federal tax dollars?  I tend to doubt it.  You take-a da money, you follow da rules!

  • glenn88

Churches are excluded from the law.   The majority of companies with religious affiliation impacted by the law are hospitals, universities and schools.   It is an employment law, and regardless of religious affiliations, all businesses are subject to employment laws. It has nothing to do with constitution and freedom of religion.   A Catholic hospital is subject to things like overtime, safety and HIPPA laws just like a non Catholic hospital.   In an employer based healthcare system then healthcare is governed by employment law. Tim shouldn’t have skipped basic government classes at UVM, because this is not a constitutional argument.   You can argue that all companies have the right to impose their religious views in your employer based health care plan.   This is what the argument is.

The Jacobs will move him soon.   They don’t want this nut representing the organization.  He is off the deep end with the WWII reference.

  • ray lewis

the way he and his teamates are playing maybe he should shut up and play hockey, because right now they suck

  • RATIONAL

Wrong.  It is being proposed that Catholic hospitals and institutions will be FORCED to provide THEIR patients with contraceptives, which is against their beliefs and teachings…..that is wrong.

  • TRUTH

Grow up and learn to disassociate someones work persona from their personal life.  He has a right to one you know….just like the rest of us.

  • Chris

sorry spread’em.  It is not only a womans decision to use birth control, it is a couples.  Yes, you have a right to open your legs or not, but the decision to use birth control should you decide to open them is up to both parties.  People need to learn to make informed decisions BEFORE the act occurs, not after.

  • Pass_the_dice

You really miss his point.  If you are going to go against at least have an understanding of what he is talking about.

  • Pass_the_dice

That is what the government wants don’t you see.
The government wants to do what they want wiithout question.

It amazes me how many people miss what is he saying.

    Just follow away.

  • trailMAC

It is HIS facebook page!  Just because he is a hockey player does he forfeit his right to be a living, breathing, THINKING person?  He didn’t say this during a post game interview.  There are times and places for thoughts and opinions, and where I think the White House thing could have been approached in a different manner, because it was tied to the team and not the individual, this is just Thomas and his thoughts, which, as Americans, we have a right to have.

  • EarlSweatshirt

Ok, I’ll play along.  Let’s say this is about relgious freedom instead of just some bible thumping abortion spin.  Can I get Tim Thomas to stand up and fight for Muslims and institute Sharia law?  How about allowing all religions to ignore American laws if they contradict with their religious convictions.  Oh, it’s different when it’s another religion?  Thought so.

  • ALAN FECTEAU

    Chris –

Try again my friend … the mandate at issue requires the religious hospitals/institutions only to OFFER their EMPLOYEES a health plan that includes access to birth control.
Birth control is not required to be PROVIDED by the hospitals/institutions to anyone, and this not about the PATIENTS.  It’s about the employees at these places. Now, if you think this very modest workplace insurance rule is still too much to stomach, then I understand all the way.  But that’s all the rule says.Let’s face it, the Catholic Bishops like to dump on Obama.  They got mad back when Notre Dame announced they would have Obama speak and receive an “honorary degree.”  They were mad because Obama is pro-choice, and the Catholic Church is pro-life.Okay, understood. But the Catholic Church is also against the Death Penalty.  And George W. Bush made a speech and got an honorary degree from a Notre Dame in April 2001.  So, how exactly did he get to be there?  He’s for the Death Penalty, and he carried it out numerous times.Alan Fecteau229-269-4359

  • Fair Hooker

If I worked at a catholic institution like Notre Dame, De Paul, etc., I would like to have the same benefits as offered to the rest of the country workers that do not work in a catholic hospital or university or even if I am a janitor at a religious institution.

That is all this is. Let us not follow the horrific example of the negligent Catholic Popes who have told Africans not to use condoms when much of Africa is engulfed in a AIDS epidemics.

But what it looks like here is that certain people hate the fact that there is a black president in the White House and he is being treated differently than any other president, disrespected at any moment possible and looking for reasons to make mountains out of nothing.

And… are we sure Tim Thomas is as smart as believed? His position is rather idiotic. His dislike for this president has driven him to compare gas ovens and genocide to the government asking institutions to provide comparative health care to their employees. Or perhaps, as it happens with many hockey players, he never discover history or poetry or literature and was itching to use this Martin Niemöller quote (which is old hat and has been used millions of times) and wanted to show us that he is a well read man and a historian… a religious historian. Look out! The crusades are soon coming to the National Hockey League.

Not all employees of catholic hospitals and universities are catholics. Thomas is a nice hockey player but what a total simpleton in comparing Hitler times to getting competitive and comparative health care for women. I have heard that Hitler comparison in one other place and that is at FOX NEWS and Tea Bagging gatherings.

DON’T CONFUSE TIM THOMAS AND THE TEA BAGGERS WITH THE FACTS. I say Thomas is perfect to go on FOX as a commentator next to the “great batsh…t” Sarah Palin and the rest of that bunch. I would not be surprised if I saw Thomas standing next to Chuck Norris at the next Tea Bagger celebrity gathering. Consider the HYPOCRISY in that Thomas belongs to a NHL players union that in a sense is responsible for getting him much of the money that he makes. He might think that is his talent alone but if the Union was not there he would be collecting peanuts just as they were at one time long ago. And sports unions are a democratic and “socialist” idea just as MEDICARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, 911 RESCUE, EMERGENCY ROOMS, ETC.., are. The hypocrites criticize “socialism” but fail to acknowledge that great societies have to be in the middle somewhere with a combination of ideas from all sides. Besides, Jesus Christ was the greatest socialist ever if we use Republican rhetoric to define the world.

The Tea Baggers and Tim Thomas and those who want to deny healthcare to a group of women call 911 Rescue and drive in beautiful “socialized” interstate highways and get Social Security and MEDICARE and worst yet, probably have all their healthcare benefits taken care of while trying to deny it to women who work at these catholic institutions. GET IN THE 21st Century. The Crusades were supposed to be over long ago.

  • Fezugf

You know what would be impressive. Instead of using guns to hunt go back to old school ways and use a bow and arrow.

  • Hayesd

tim thomas is no saint and should get the facts straight before mouthing off. No one is taking any religious freedoms away or forcing contraceptives down anyone’s throat. This is about the right for an employee to have contraceptive(which are expensive) covered under their insurance plan. There are many women who have to take contraceptives for medical reasons. Furthermore, not everyone who works for a catholic hospital, school, etc. are catholics. I thought this country was suppose to be about freedom and choice.(unless you are a radical/extremist conservative who wants to dictate what people(mainly women) can and can’t do in their personl lives!!!!!

  • Chris

They have freedom of choice – choose another hospital or choose to go pay for a condom at a pharmacy.  Typical liberal douchebags…gimmme gimmme gimmmeeeeeeee.  Wahhhhhhhhhh

  • Anonymous

Wrong. This is about the gov’t forcing religious businesses to offer things in their insurance plan that they don’t want to offer. The companies have chosen not to offer these services, but now are going to be forced to offer them against their will.
It’s unconstitutional but obviously President Downgrade doesn’t care about that document.

  • Hayesd

yeah,yeah,yeah…..sorry this is NOT what is happening in this country and people should know this by now.  This is about republicans/conservatives/teaparty stirring up trouble(what they do best), by lying, distorting facts, and fear mongoring to the public. They don’t have  any economic solutions, so they stance on social politics(as if that will solve the problems with jobs and the economy!!!!).  PEOPLE GET REAL AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK……GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!

  • Hayesd

Hit the “like” by accident….I don’t like it!!!….just so you know.
The only hypocrisy and bigotry is coming from the radical/extreme conservatives…..maybe from the “DO NOTHING” republican congress also.
This administration is NOT taking anyones freedoms away…if you people did your homework and get the facts straight, you would know the truth.  If you any intelligence, you don’t get the facts or truth by listening to fox”news”, limbah, hannity, oreilly, beck and all the other lying nutcases.  Unfortunately, there are small minority who do and spread lies and fear mongoring to confuse and divide the country.

  • Hayesd

The only thing thomas is “dead on wrong”  I wonder if thomas realizes what his precious republicans are trying to do to the UNIONS?…doesn’t he realize that the NHL is a UNION? Maybe thomas shouldn’t play for the NHL…hypocrit….I’m sure he likes his paycheck from the UNION doesn’t he!!!…..republicans are such bigots!!!

  • Hayesd

Thank you for saying that!!!….how refreshing to hear from people who know what they are talking about and get the facts staight.

  • NufCed Tigger-Dave Boston-Rsm

The law forces Catholic run businesses such as hospitals(being the main example) to provide free of charge in their insurance offerings free birth control access to their employees. Forcing them to pay to provide for something they feel is against their morals and a major part of the laws they follow goes against their right to freedom of religion no one is forcing anyone to take the pill but let me put it this way if you are personally morally opposed to heroin use for instance would would want to be forced to hafta offer heroin at your expense as a perk of being employed by you?

  • NufCed Tigger-Dave Boston-Rsm

Ok I supprot Tim Thomas and his freedom to stand up and say what he thinks feels and believes. Seems I even agree with him on his stance. I also, while I do not agree with his haters on these subjects, stand up for their rights to opinions and voicing said opinions even while I do not agree with them. This is America after all and freedom to say what you want is there too even if I don’t like what you say.

  • NufCed Tigger-Dave Boston-Rsm

  • Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand

This is about freedom of religion.  Why should a Catholic hospital have the right to disallow any of its employees from using contraceptives?  This isn’t the gov’t telling Catholic hospitals to hand out contraceptives as many of you seem to believe.  It’s the government telling an employer to respect the beliefs of their employees (it just so happens that the employer in this case is the Catholic church).  If Tim Thomas REALLY cared about individuals and their freedoms, he would support the government telling all employers they can’t push their religious beliefs onto their employees!

  • Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand

Seriously, if the employer in this case was not the Catholic church, but rather MSNBC, which side of the argument would TT be on?  Remember, this is an employer stating they won’t pay for a portion of their employees health insurance because doing so goes against what they believe.  What’s next Tim?  Wal-Mart suddenly finds the writings of Mary Baker Eddy to be profound.  So profound, that they say they are now adamant followers of Christian Science. Christian Science, as some may know, shuns health care and feels that one’s belief in God will heal them.  That said, Wal-Mart states they will no longer pay for insurance for their employees because it goes against their religious beliefs.

Is this what you want Tim?
