Kyle Turris not suspended for hit on Joe Corvo 02.26.12 at 2:17 pm ET
By WEEI

Ottawa Senators forward Kyle Turris will not be suspended for his hit on Bruins defenseman Joe Corvo. Sportsnet’s Ian Mendes was the first to report the news.

The Senators forward delivered a hit to the head of Corvo at the 5:00 mark in the third period in Saturday night’s game in Ottawa. Turris received a two-minute boarding minor for the hit. The league’s Department of Player Safety held a disciplinary hearing for Turris but resulted in no suspension.

Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan said in a statement, “Because there was enough head contact on this hit, the Department of Player Safety felt it was necessary to convene a hearing to examine the play further. After reviewing the video extensively as we heard Turris’ explanation of how the play developed, we concluded that the head was not targeted intentionally or even recklessly and that the circumstances surrounding the hit contributed significantly to the amount of head contact that resulted. We therefore have decided that there will be no supplemental discipline added to the penalty assessed on the play.”

The Bruins host the Senators on Tuesday night at TD Garden.

Here’s a look at the hit:

Glad they didn’t suspend him because then he would’ve missed Tuesday night’s rematch.

wow shanahan is joke if it was a bruins player deff wouldve been suspended what joke shanahan biasness

Should have gotten 1 or 2 games. Having said that, I am thrilled he’ll be in uniform on Tuesday in Boston.

I’m from Boston, but this hit wasn’t worthy of suspension, he came around to the side/front before he laid the hit on him, and if you didn’t listen to Jackass Edwards (sry but hes an idiot), you wouldn’t think it’s as bad. Jack made it sound like he was going 100 MPH and jumped 5 ft in the air and hit him with a hammer in the head…penalty…sure, suspension? Nah….and come on…you can’t tell me that Lucic hit on Miller was unintentional?

You leave your feet, you get suspended. Consistent application of the rules please. However, Lucic will handle the discipline on Tuesday night…

  • Cory Ducey

I’m sorry.  But he clearly stated that if primary contact is to the head, there will be supplementary discipline.   There was contact to the head and it was blind side.

    No consistency…

Give Shanahan credit, he and the disciplinary office are consistent when it comes to reviewing hits against any Bruin player. Still waiting for someone to get suspended for a hit to the head on a Bruin.

  • Risingart13

Sure! I bet if it was Lucic hitting Turris he would of been suspended. I don’t know who’s worse this year the Hockey League Operations or the f***’n officiating! Another blown call, thanks Shamaham you jerk!!

  • Gman

Sorry, Thorny will beat Lucic to Turris.

  • Mike66r

Once again the league falls down and as always the Bruins will settle this issue for themselves.
    Tuesday will be a war.
Good luck Turris. ha ha ha ha ha

good point there i wanna see turris in a tussle with shawn thornton betch ya who wins that bout

  • Josh4390

If the primary contact is the head…..then suspension!  How bout a fine!!!!  Something.  Isn’t that what we have been led to believe.  Regardless of the intent.  He should have gotten at least a game or two.  The hit was not quite the ”crime”  that Edwards portrayed, but still a punishable offense.

This years Horton hit (how does a guy get a possible season ending concussion in open ice without contact to the head?) and in the same game Kelly took a hit in front of his own net to the side of the head and no call or conference from the officials or the league.

    No consistency Shanahan!!!!!  None.
