Tim Thomas: ‘I stand with Chick-fil-A’

07.26.12 at 5:33 pm ET
By WEEI

Tim Thomas loves him some Facebook, and the owners of Chick-Fil-A love them some homophobia. Thomas, the master of using social network to ruffle feathers, weighed in on the Cathy family, which owns Chick-fil-A and opposes gay marriage, Thursday.

Wrote Thomas:

I stand with Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A is privately owned by the Cathy family. The company president, Dan Cathy, drew the wrath of gay rights advocates and supporters when he made recent statements that some have alleged are anti-gay.

Cathy told Baptist Press that the company was unapologetically in favor of traditional marriage.

“Guilty as charged,” he said. “We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

In a separate interview on the Ken Coleman Show — Cathy suggested that the nation could face God’s wrath over the redefinition of marriage.

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” Cathy said. “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about.”

I wish people would stop making such a big deal about this. Many millions of Americans feel the same as Chick-fil-A and Tim Thomas. We have no right to tell Chick-fil-A what to support or not to support. I don’t stop watching ESPN or boycott Disney because of the things they endorse.

  • Anonymous

Justin, the difference is ESPN and Disney support ideas and people and non-discriminatory actions.  Thomas/Chick-fil-A are endorsing a denial of ideas, people, rights while approving of discrimination.  All the while couching it in the presentation that those who don’t believe what they’re saying in exercising their free speech are going to gain ‘God’s Wrath’ or are less-American.   Timmy and Chick-Fil-A need to understand that what they say may have blowback in the same way people who are against guns need to be prepared for the blowback they receive.

Supporting marriage (because the term “traditional marriage” is tautology) is not the same as being homophobic, and I wish that this entry, as well as the other thousands of articles about the Cathy interview, were accurate in their descriptions of Mr. Cathy’s actual views.

  • Matt

Good post, Justin. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but people need to realize that no matter what Tim’s stance was on this issue, people would excessively bash him. I feel the same way as Tim, but here me out on this: I’m a devout Christian that believes every word in the Bible to not only be factual, but also the true word of God. Through his mercy, he gave us life, things in the world that we either possess or use, and he gave his one and only son for us, especially the ungodly. In the Bible it says the marriage is ONLY between “one man and one woman.” God has destroyed multiple nations that supported homosexual marriage, so Thomas, the Cathy family, etc. are right to feel worried that because we live in a nation that supports what the Bible calls an “abomination”, we may very well be inviting his wrath. We, as humans, have no right to question anything that God believes in, as well as his teachings. He gave us life, think about it, for those of you who are married, I’m sure you love spending time with your family. You know, the little things that are absolutely valuable to you, none of that is possible without the work of God, who blessed you with loving, caring, and above all, supportive, family members. Therefore following his teachings are the VERY LEAST we can do. Isaiah 58:1 states, “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and warn my people of their transgressions.” Also, in the Bible, a good part of the definition of “love thy neighbor” is to rebuke them of their sins, and gently warn them of their transgressions like it commands us to do in Isaiah 58:1. Tim is doing this. Think about it. Remember the well-known story about Jesus saving that woman who was taken into adultery from being stoned to death by numerous members of her town? The Mosaic Code called for people who committed adultery to be stoned to death. Christ could have called her a piece of you know what for committing adultery and done nothing. But he didn’t. He stopped them and said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” The crowd then left. That meant that because those members of the crowd had committed numerous sins, especially adultery, they were in no position to bring to death someone else. In stead of calling her out, and letting her die, and belittling her, he not only saved her, but said “Go now, and sin no more.” He did what his biblical duty was (Isaiah 58:1) by warning her to stop committing adultery, and did so in a gentle way. He is not hating homosexuals by being against gay marriage, he is a man deeply-rooted in faith, who both fears and loves God, and is trying to do his duty by following the commandments, and warning people against sin, so that they may realize what they are doing wrong in the eyes of God, and so hopefully they do not perish (go to Hell). Also, Tim not commenting on his status, responding to people who have different views than him in a negative fashion speaks volumes.

The idea of “traditional marriage” as defined by a lot of churches (not all) is full of historical and biblical fallacies.  “Traditional marriage” is really just code for not liking gay people and wanting to stick it to them.  End of story.  Conservatives love to harken back to good ole days that never existed.

I love how the media loves to contort the truth to create controversy. Look into their personal lives and spew some dirt on them and turn the tables. Tim was stating his preference not his disdain. You know what they say about assumptions. Jeeze!

  • Matt

Not in the case of all churches or people. I am against homosexual marriage because I believe every word in the Bible, and it says that any marriages that are not strictly between one man and one woman are an “abomination” and that “they are worthy of death (hell).” I don’t hate homosexuals by having the beliefs that I do. I feel that way because in the Bible, it says that no human has the right to challenge anything that God mandates, and there are multiple instances where he destroyed nations that supported homosexual marriage by challenging what God has mandated.

Organizations, just like athlete’s, endorse ideas based on perceived public opinion. Questions are craftily answered with politically correct responses instead of how they may really feel. People should just worry about themselves instead of concentrating on attacking somebody because they didn’t conceal their feelings. Gay people have just as much right as anyone else but some people don’t agree with it. Everyone’s brain works differently. People need to have enough polite respect for other peoples thoughts instead of bitching and moaning and creating an argument. Everyone thinks they are right but there is no absolute.

  • M@

What nations did “God” destroy? And what proof do you have “he” did it?

  • M@

Bible was written by man. Not God.

  • Eastwood320

Many people in this country oppose gay marriage. In fact our President, President Obama, opposed gay marriage until a few months ago. I don’t recall anyone calling him, also a very religious man, homophobic.

  • who supports this junk?

I hope you guys who don’t support gay marriage also don’t eat shellfish, pork, or wear gold or polyester. Hope you’ve never gotten divorced, or have a tattoo. God would be pretty rip s%*& angry if you did. Human rights are non debatable. Not supporting gay marriage is discriminatory because you don’t see two people who love each other as equal because of their sexual orientation. It’d be the same argument if it was based on the color of their skin. You believe in a being whose ultimate message is “love” yet at the same time he forbids it. It would ultimately affect you just as much as the millions of people who get divorced every year. NOT AT ALL.

  • David

Yet another deliberately misleading article about this story. WEEI (and Mayor Menino for that matter) should be ashamed of themselves.  Supporting traditional marriage does not make one “homophobic.”  It simply means that one believes the institution of marriage is reserved for one man and one woman.  It seems to many if you hold these views you must be a hateful person.  I believe in traditional marriage and I certainly don’t hate any gay people.  I simply disagree.
Words like “bigot” and “homophobic” are in most cases inappropriately used.  Tim Thomas, Dan Cathy and anyone else should be entitled to that opinion in this country without these kinds of labels.

What proof do you have God did not inspire scripture?

  • Stephen

There is a big difference between free speech and actively blocking human rights through political action. Dan Cathy enjoys the former and is guilty of the latter. And if you spend your money at Chick-fil-A, then so are you. If you spend money at that business, you are indirectly contributing to an organization that actively tries to deny civil rights to gay Americans.

  • David

How is Dan Cathy denying “civil rights to gay Americans?”  I had know idea he ( and his chicken eateries) wielded this kind of power. Please stop.  Chick-Fil-A is not going hurt the gay marriage cause.  At least it wasn’t until all this fuss was created by gay marriage supporters and the Hollywood elite.  These kinds of boycotts almost always backfire by igniting the opposition.  Chick-Fil-A may very well see an increase in business as a result.

  • David

Sorry, I meant No idea not “know.”

If you believe in every word of the Bible to be factual and the true word of God, then you also belive in unicorns. And no, that is not a smart @$$ remark, because this is what Job 39:9-12 says “9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
10 Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
11 Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
12 Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
    Sooooooooo……enjoy your unicorn.

  • Allen

oh, and real quick, can you tell me the Bible verse where it says marriage is “ONLY between “one man and one woman.”, to quote you? Because here are five examples that prove otherwise
Lamech had two wives – Genesis 4:19.
    Esau had three wives – Genesis 26:34 & 28:9.
    Jacob had four wives – Genesis 29:28 & 30:4-9.
Gideon had many wives – Judges 8:30.
Abijah had 14 wives – II Chronicles 13:21
my suggestion? Try READING the bible.

  • Allen

If someone is claiming that something DID happen (in this case the “Bible is inspired by God” arguement) then it is THAT person’s responsibility to prove that what he is saying is true. It is NOT someone elses to prove that he is wrong. Ex: There is a 300 lb canary in my living room, so I call you over to see it. Before you get here, it flies away, leaving absolutely no evidence that is incontrovertible. You get here, and you don’t believe me. It is MY job to prove that it was here, NOT yours to prove that it was not.
Another example: The LAW in the US. I do not have to prove my innocence in a court of law if I am charged with doing something illegal. The person MAKING the accusation that I DID DO SOMETHING illegal (typically the DA/ADA) has to prove I did.

  • Matt

The shellfish and pork laws were gotten rid of after a while. Especially when Peter was hesitant to “kill and eat” as God told him. He was hesitant because certain foods were unclean, and forbidden to eat, but God told him that everything he made was now clean to eat. You can look that up in both Matthew and Mark.

  • Matt

It says multiple times, especially in the books of Timothy that the Bible is the word of God. It also says that the Bible is not symbolic of anything with regards to the stories, and that everything that happened, happened.

  • Matt

Genesis 19. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Read Genesis 18, too. Genesis 19:14-”
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city! ” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.” Genesis 19:23-29-”
By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah —from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.
So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophethat overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.”

  • Allen

Oooooooooooooooo. Of course. Finally, proof that God inspired the Bible!!! Because it SAID it did. Well. I am convinced. How did no one else ever think of this???………..Oh, wait. They did. And it was just as idiotic an argument then as it is now. Since when do we ever believe something SIMPLY because it said it did/did not do something?

  • Allen

Relevance? Because I could pick out random Bible verses too……..Hebrews 13:3
Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.See?

  • Flip

I just love their sandwiches. The man sells chicken sandwiches. Lets argue about this non sense and not worry that Obama has put us 17 trillion in the hole and wants universal healthcare!! Wake up everyone while we argue over Big Gulps and chicken sandwiches the government is slowly taking over every aspect of our lives!

Chick-fil-A and TT have a right to their opinions, whether you agree or disagree.

I have to laugh about people screaming about discrimination. Both of the above have stated their PERSONAL opinions.

Chick-fil-A does not discriminate in hiring, whether you are straight or gay.

Chick-fil-A does not turn gays, married or single, away from their door.

So, unless you can come up with a specific case where Chick-fil-A knowingly discriminated against a customer or employee, please give it a rest.

If you disagree with the owner of Chick-fil-A, don’t patronize his business.

If you disagree with TT, don’t go to his facebook page.

    But please, stop snivelling.

  • Free Speech McGee

Guess what? If you agree with Tim or Chick-fil-A then, oops, you’re on the wrong side of history. See that line on the ground? On one are those that oppose equal rights for women, African-Americans, Hispanics, and many more. Most people consider (especially the young, like myself) look forward to the future when those with their antiquated views die off. On the other side of the line are those who get it. No argument. No discussion. No comeback. We believe that all men are created equal on this side of the line. If you’re not with us, you’re against us–and we’re not the weak liberals you make yourself feel so powerful over. We’re mad as hell and we know how to close a fist and take a shot. Go ahead; be on the wrong side. Defend your holy book. May your god answer your prayers when you most need him.

  • Titletown1

    Yeah, OK Nancy.

I think your spandex are too tight.

  • Free Speech McGee

Liking your own post? Look out. We got a badass over here.

Go away Timmy. Nobody really cares what you think.

  • Chad

I honestly can’t believe half the stuff I am reading in this discussion. I’ve never critized the bible or any religion for that matter as people are entitled to believe what they want, but to state what is quoted in the bible as being factual is an absolute joke. The reality is, is that we (just like every other biotic species on the planet) are the result of biology. I mean, the fact that there are so many different religions believing in different higher powers or entities disproves the entire concept of religion itself. I am a heterosexual male, and have taken many courses throughout my education that discuss aspects of religion and philosophy, and to buy into every word of the bible as if it were factual is moronic. The bible is nothing more than a good book to live by. A book that encourages people to be decent toward one another, one that imparts that there are consequences to negative actions. Why is it that religion consistantly fails to anwser questions like, if we were created by the lord why is there so much suffering in the world? Or why are we here? Different branches of religion say God created us but then abandoned the world, and thats why there is suffering. Thats a cop out of an answer if I’ve ever heard one. We are the product of evolution, as a species we are progressing. If we were created in gods image then why are we changing? Both physiologically and technologically.

Its fine to believe in something, however when it escalates to the point of depriving fellow human beings of being happy, religion becomes a problem. Whats funny to me is that there is actually a direct correlation between higher education and holding an athiest viewpoint (look it up). Fact of the matter is, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation, people are entitled to what makes them happy. And with the way trends are going, hopefully for your sake you’re able to adjust to homosexual marriages because they will become far more common.  You religious radicals can believe what you wish, but when we die i can assure you we will all simply decompose in the ground, returning carbon to the earth’s soil lol. Religion, what a joke.

  • Matt

No. I’m not against homosexuality and gay marriage because it makes me feel good to stop them from being happy and to suffer. Quite the contrary. I’m against it because I believe in the Bible, and so does Tim. It says in the Bible that if you don’t warn people in a gentle manner, to stop their sinning, you technically hate them and are not doing what you need to to “warn thy neighbor.” At that point, you’re just enabling sin, and aside from idolizing other Gods, homosexuality is the most dangerous sin to partake in, and God says in the Bible that unless those people who engage in such activities mourn for their sins and repent, they are worthy of death. I’m sure you can infer what death means…it’s Hell. And from what we’ve seen in interviews and various Facebook posts, Tim believes this. Enabling sin/wrongdoing, kind of like what Joe Pa did in not making more of an effort to contact the authorities and even meet with Sandusky and tell him to shape up, instead of letting him keep an office and keeping his mouth virtually shut. I’m not God, nor would I ever pretend to be, but from reading the Bible, one would infer that because of that, Joe Pa is probably in hell right now.
