David Krejci wants Tim Thomas to return to Bruins 09.10.12 at 1:57 pm ET
By DJ Bean

David Krejci thinks it's too early for two-time Vezina-winner Tim Thomas to call it quits. (AP)

BOLTON — The Tim Thomas subject is a rather touchy one when it comes to the Bruins. He told them after the season he’d be taking the year off, leaving them with a potential salary cap burden. Furthermore, his exit paved the way for Tuukka Rask to get his chance as a starting goaltender, so Thomas’ (former?) teammates have often gone on record of respecting his decision to not play this year while pointing out that they are confident in what Rask will do with his opportunity.

Bruins players have danced around the subject of what might happen if Thomas were to return after next season, but when David Krejci brought up the subject Monday at the team’s golf tournament in Bolton, the center made his opinion clear: He wants Thomas back with the Bruins.

Asked what his reaction was when he heard about Thomas’ decision, here’s what Krejci said:

“I was in shock a little bit just like everybody else I guess, but you’ve got to respect his personal life. If he wants to take a year off, then he should do what he feels is right for him and his family. I respect that, but I hope he’s going to come back because he’s, in my opinion, I think he left — I hope he’s going to come back. If not, I think he left too early because he’s still one of the best goalies in the league. It would be bad for everybody, for the league, for the fans, for himself and for us if he wouldn’t [resume] his career. I haven’t talked to him this summer, so I don’t really have much to talk about.”

Tim Thomas should go if he doesn’t want to be a Bruin.

  • Shagrat

Yikes.  Is everybody going to continue to take sides over Timmy even into next season.  Hopefully, a trade od Thomas (and stellar play from Tukka) will put an end to all this.

  • Barry

Timmy should disappear if he doesn’t want to be a Bruin. He’s just a big side show distraction to the entire team.

  • P Freiss

Timmy never said he didn’t want to be a Bruin. If he keeps in shape and took time of for the reasons he stated ( his contract allows him to take the year off) then I want him back. He is one of the star goaltenders in the NHL. Like Rask and maybe Thomas wouldn’t mid playing fewer games and playing in tandem with Rask.
    Great 1-2 set up!

sit him out , who gives a sh–

Maybe it’s time Krejci leave too!

  • 40 year Bruin Fan

I’m tired of the hypocrites in Boston. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country where all of our professional sports teams are in the upper echelons of their leagues (except for the current disaster known as the Red Sox), yet the fans still complain. If a player is all about the money, the fans complain he doesn’t care about anything but the money, but when a player obviously is more concerned about his family than he is about the money the same fans beat him up. At then end of the day Thomas has been one of the best goaltenders in hockey for the last few season. Without Thomas Bruins don’t win a Stanley Cup, no question about it. Thomas signed a contract that allows him to do exactly what he is doing, if the Bruins didn’t want to sign the contract then they shouldn’t have signed it. Lastly, Thomas has never said he didn’t want to play for the Bruins. In fact if he wanted to be traded, taking a year off is the worse thing he could do, because now teams are going to be reluctant to trade for him. So stop complaining about him, let him get his head on straight and take care of his family issues, whatever they are and when he is right he will be back. If Rask can step into the void and pick up his play then the Bruins will trade Thomas, if Rask can’t then be thankful that Thomas will be back. Either way it works out in our favor. Would you prefer the Bruins become the chaos that are the Red Sox. At least with the Bruins, regardless of what the fans think, they are supportive of his decision. Or smart enough to keep their complaints behind closed doors.

I totally agree with the 40 year fan.  I’ve been a fan for about the same amount of time and I’ve never seen a better goalie, up to and including Cheevers.  Stop bitching and go with it.  He has the right to take the year off.  As long as he stays in shape, what’s your problem?  We just have to hope Rask is 1/2 the goaltender Thomas is and can step up and do the job.  By the way, Pierre, if you want to leave, don’t let us stop you.

Wow, loyalty…that is something that is rare.  But, as Krejci said…He still is one of the best goalies in the league. Bruin fan I am…hope to see Thomas in net next year.

Maybe you need to learn what it is to be a teammate.  Thomas was the instrumental reason we won the cup.  I respect him in his decision’s to do what he has to for himself and his family. By the way, are you a Bruin fan???  Only reason I can come up with for the reason you made that comment.

  • Defenz77

Amen.  Finally, someone that gets the point across.  Even thought I do feel that Thomas will always be better in net than Rask.  Don’t get me wrong I feel Rask is a great goaltender. But, Thomas is one of the elite players that ever played in goal.

I am a very loyal, very fierce Bruin’s fan.  I am the same with the Red Sox and have the tattoos to prove it.  I’ve been a diehard fan of the sox since the age of about 6 or so and of the Bruin’s since 1972, the year the great Bobby Orr made that stunning goal to win the cup.  Yes.  Rask has the potential to be great.  However, Thomas took us to 2 Stanley Cups.  Can anyone argue that?  Some questionable fans think he, Thomas, is bailing out.  I don’t think I’ll put my opinion of that here.  Nasty language and all.  He has the right to some quality time with his family.  I, too, hope to see him next year.  Thanks for your message.

When did Thomas take us to the 2nd cup?

Timmy Boy has stuck the B’s with a hot potato. They really need to trade him so that his cap money can be used for a productive player not one on sabbatical or whatever you may want to call it.IMO I think Timmy Thomas is sticking it to the B’s with his middle finger wagging out.I can understand he has his issues but why hurt your teammates also?Dump his arse quickly I say they need another halfway decent scorer.

It would be less of an issue if Tim was 30-31 years old as opposed to almost 40 and taking a year.

Once again he’s not 30 years old anymore he’s going to be 40 soon and will be hanging them up.With a monsoon of respect to Timmy T and his decision he has taken a couple bullets from the gun/B’s and if the current goalies can’t do the job what then? They need to define his intentions and trade him ASAP.
