Shawn Thornton undergoing evaluation, update expected Friday 02.01.13 at 12:35 am ET
By Mike Petraglia

Bruins coach Claude Julien said an update on Shawn Thornton is expected on Friday after the Bruins enforcer received a full evaluation Thursday night.

Thornton was handed a rare beating in a bout with Buffalo’s John Scott three minutes into a 7-4 loss to the Sabres Thursday night at TD Garden.

After serving his five-minute fighting major in the penalty box, Thornton skated across the ice and immediately to the Bruins dressing room. He did not return.

“We’ll know more [Friday],” Julien said immediately after the game. “He’s being evaluated, until we get a definite answer, nothing more.”

Julien said Thornton’s loss in the fight had little to do with his team’s defenseless loss to the Sabres, a game in which they allowed seven goals in the final two periods.

“I mean you know that’s just part of the game, and you know Scott did his job that his job for them and Shawn did his job for us,” Julien said. “And those things happen you win some you lose some. But at the same time I don’t think it deflated our team. We were in the lead 3-1 there half way through the second so it didn’t do anything in that way. I think again you know, we keep looking for other reasons than the one I gave you guys – we were just terrible defensively. And you know the other part is – give them credit they played a really good game tonight. And I’m not saying that just to say, they really did play a good solid game tonight and they were the better team at the end of the night.”

“I think it’s what happens, it’s a square-off between the two tough guys in the building,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “Somebody said they were talking in warm-ups, I didn’t really anticipate what was going to happen. I think John has provided us some team toughness, and it’s spilled off onto other guys. He did a nice job for us and I thought the rest of the game was just a hard fought game.”

As for the Bruins’ players, they reacted in different ways to the Thornton loss.

“He’s been a great team guy here for the last six years, and he takes a lot of pride in what he does, sticking up for himself and his teammates,” Milan Lucic said. “He’s a great team guy, and he’s an important person to this hockey club. It was unfortunate that he missed the rest of the game after that, but knowing him, he’s a tough guy and he’ll try to get back as soon as he can.”

“I wasn’t too sure if Thorty was gonna fight him, but that’s the type of guy he is, make sure no one else had to do the job and you know, did it,” added Tyler Seguin. “I came in and saw him, he looked like he was doing fine.

“Obviously Thorty can fight and he’s a tough guy, but you’ve still got to look at that Scott guy, he’s not a small guy and Thorty has a ton of passion, and will do anything it takes for this team. Whether it’s fighting a giant just to get the boys going, win or lose, that’s what he’s gonna do.”

Scott is just friggin huge…Thorton didn’t stand a chance. I can’t remember seeing him get tuned on like that in a long time if not ever.

  • Sicko

Yeah, I just said the other night how tough Thornton was. I don’t even know if Thornton a chance to throw a decent punch. Last night it just seemed he couldn’t get loose from Scott. Never had a chance and if he fights him again he might have to just throw a couple and hold on because of the extreme reach difference. Scott’s an old throwback to the days of goons playing a couple of shifts with little to no skills except fighting.

Ruff is a tool shed. He hasn’t won anything in 16 years with the Sabres and he calls a timeout with 14 seconds left to rub salt in the wound. He’s a joke.

  • Sean Rogers

Go get him Chara, your his size and you’re tough. Skill guys can give beatens too. For those who don’t want to chance losing Chara, he can just as easily go down with an injury. Everyone should be willing to mix it up.

I hope it’s not a fractured orbital or cheek bone.

That was an awful 3rd. Bruins are much better then this.

  • cam1759

Why is he a tool shed? He put their goon out ther because Julien put Boston’s next best goon out there ( Thornton had his cheeks knocked off his face and couldnt help out ).  Maybe just take the loss like men and move on?

  • ScoopBurton

we can pretty much count on it not being a brain injury

Yup, great trade off, just what the opposition wants. There’s no one even in Providence worth losing for 5 minutes with Scott. Other than fighting, the guy is a liability out there for Buffalo. Let them put him out there for his 8-10 minutes a game.

  • Uncle Buck

Tuned is the word.  Let Chara take him on.  How many times has Scott taken on someone bigger than himself.  Hate to risk a broken hand on a goon like Scott, but I think Chara could do the job.

  • Uncle Buck

Yep, and it didn’t go unnoticed.  The Bruins are a much better team and Ruff knows it. That was his Cup last night.  Can’t wait to play these guys next.

  • NickelCitySabre

    Don’t Poke the Buffalo.

  • Uncle Buck

His team had a three goal lead there sunshine. He was looking to start something instead of just playing out the clock.  He is so used to losing he doesn’t know how to handle an occasional win.  Move on ?  Get a clue.

  • NickelCitySabre

Go Pats this weekend! What a waste of season.

  • cam1759

Check Boston’s record vs the Sabres since ’05. Thanks, i’ll hang up and listen………….

  • cam1759

Julien put MacDermid out there first…..that is when Ruff called the TO and put Scott out there. What’s the problem with that?   Now, if Scott took liberties with MacDermid at that time, then i’d say it was a shady move. It was game one of five this year…accept the loss and come to play on the 10th.

  • ScoopBurton

It was a rare event…and refreshing too see.

Scott is a throwback, because he truly can’t play in the NHL.  He only gets 4 minutes of ice time a night and his line is terrible when he is on the ice.  Most enforcers know are legit 4th line players who don’t hurt the team on the ice.
Next time they play the Sabres they should decline the fight with Scott and force Ruff to play with 11 forwards for the night or keep exposing Scott on the ice to bait a confrontation. This is what a lot of teams do know and guys like Scott and Colton Orr are healthy scratches or sent down to the minors.   If they want to go at Scott, then call up Robbins from Providence to deal with him. One professional AHL goon against another.

  • Kcourtema

To me it looked like Thornton may have been a bit too aggressive off the bat. Maybe he was a little intimidated by Scott’s size and wanted to get the jump on him.  He over committed and got trapped between Scott and the boards.  Scott isn’t the most skilled fighter I’ve seen nor is he the most agile.  I think if a smaller guy (he outweighs Thornton by over 50 lbs) takes him on, he’s better served being out on open ice and nowhere near the boards.

  • Kcourtema

Also, this guy can be had.  Colton Orr dropped him like a bad habit a few weeks ago.

  • Uncle Buck

Last 5 seasons for Buffalo; 207 wins 203 losses.  Missed playoffs 3 out of 5 seasons. Two playoff appearances, bounced in the first round both appearances, once to Philly and once to Boston.  Playoff record last 5 years; 5 wins and 8 losses.

Last 5 seasons for Boston; 228 wins 162 losses. Made playoffs all 5 seasons. Won one Stanley Cup. Playoff record last 5 years; 36 wins and 23 losses.

( left regular season ties out)

You tell me who the better team is.

  • cam1759

No no no, i said to check Boston’s record vs the Sabres since ’05. I know the Bruins beat the Sabres in their last playoff series, i know the Sabres lost to Philly in that playoff series, i know the Sabres havent won a cup EVER, i know Ruff might need to go………i’m a Sabres fan, i obviously know this stuff.   But when you infer that Boston owns Buffalo, you need to back that up with something concrete. You’re right, the Bruins are better, or at least they’re supposed to be, right?   But you then have to explain why they lost (bad) to Buffalo last night.  Wasnt because they have a 4-minute per game goon….wasnt because Ruff called a TO with 17 seconds left to put our goon out there in response to Julien’s line……..so, why, if Boston is the better team, did they lose last night?

You see? These arguments are stupid……you lost a game…it happens.  Move on without talking $hit. Admit when you have a bad game…..we do.  More often than not.

  • Uncle Buck

My original point was calling out Ruff for his timeout when the game was all but over. I attempted to point out that Boston is the better team and Ruff has not experienced enough winning to know how to end a game with a little class. There was no inference on my part that Boston “owned Buffalo”.Your reply to me was on that post.  I will follow your argument wherever you want to take it.  The reason Boston lost last night is because they played like crap in the 3rd period and stopped skating.  It was their first regulation loss this year.  The result was they were embarrassed on their home ice by an inferior team. They took a beat down and it is obvious why that happened.  As a Buffalo fan, you should rejoice.  It won’t last long though.  Boston should focus a little more on Vanek and not get all caught up with this Scott character.

  • glenn88

Julien basically said it was one of the worse defensive games Boston has played.   Still had several open nets to tie it with a few minutes left.  I think even Buffalo would agree they are a class below the Bruins, but hey they had a good night when the Bruins were off.  You are not going undeafeted in hockey.  Just not sure Buff fans should be talking Cup or even playoffs.   That team lacks depth.

  • Brick77979

Giving up 60lbs and 8 inches, I give him all the credit in the world… I know your candy a** wouldn’t go out there… And lindy ruff is a joke…. 16 years and nothing to show for it…. Can Neely vs lindy?

  • Brick77969

Your 3-3…. And your team sucks…

  • cam1759

    agree 100%

  • cam1759

i know we arent good………now.  That’s kind of the point. If we suck, you shouldnt have lost to us and then make stupid comments afterwards about the Sabres or their coach or what they did/didnt do during the game.   Blame the Bruins for losing, not the Sabres for winning.

  • Jim Piersall

Why does hockey talk revolve around fights and concussions?  Oh wait, because it’s soccer on skates.  Without the fights everyone would be asleep.

  • Christina

Everyone on that team should have stepped up. Joe Thornton mixes it up anytime, anywhere, with anyone, He needs to have someone have his back too. We all knew this game was about payback and was going to be very physical, I was just very surprised there wasn’t more give than get. Scott’s a big guy and not that Thornton can’t take care of himself or anything, I just thought there would have been more guys that stepped up. The fact that they were in the Garden and pretty much disrespected us, was really hard to watch. Wait till we play them at home, that game could be really ugly. That being said, we need to regroup and get ready for the next game. We’re looking good so far, so let’s keep fighting. GO BRUINS!!!!

Taking on Scott like that was just plain stupid. Every team in the league lays their share of eggs over the course of the regular season. Exhibit A for the Bruins.
Sabres & Hasek got screwed out of the cup vs. Dallas
