Bruins trade Tim Thomas to Islanders 02.07.13 at 5:35 pm ET
By DJ Bean

The Bruins have traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the Islanders in exchange for a conditional second-round pick in 2014 or 2015.

Thomas, 38, is in the final year of his contract but is not playing this season. His contract calls for a $3 million salary but his cap hit is $5 million (Thomas had salaries of $6 million in each of the first two years of the four-year, $20 million deal). Thomas reportedly still does not intend to play this season, as the move was made by the Islanders in order to get over the salary cap floor by Friday and thus be compliant with the salary cap.

The pick sent to the Bruins is conditional on Thomas playing one game for the Islanders, meaning they will not receive it if Thomas sticks to his plan of sitting out the season.

Thomas, a ninth round pick of the Nordiques in 1994, signed with the Bruins prior to the 2002-03 season and eventually established himself as one of the greatest goaltenders in league history. He won the Vezina Trophy in both 2008-09 and 2010-11 and led the B’s to a Stanley Cup championship in 2011 as the Conn Smythe winner.

How DARE he speak his mind! Doesn’t he know this is America! Oh, wait….

  • Bsox67

Thanks for the memories. Never forgot the way you played during the cup run.. But what i will remember more is how you left your team high and dry when it mattered most. I’ll take the bag of pucks we got for ya Timmy. At least we know they won’t quit.

  • NYSteve

pretty lame the islanders eed to make a deal to get to the salary floor. no wonder they have been irrelevant for 30 years

  • Bsox67

Couldn’t have said it better myself Billy..

Thanks for helping to bring us the cup TT! Have a great rest of your career and enjoy your tin-foil hat.

  • Bruinman86

Gee, you’d think they could have gotten a 1st rounder for him.  But, he’s only signed for 1 year and he’s old.  So I suspect that factored heavily into things.  Well, at least it’s over. Time to turn the page.

  • Chris Nilan

Kobra543, He is not going to play this year anyhow, so we will actually get nothing, not even the 2nd round pick. We got rid of the salary cap hit, that’s all the could be done for us, and NYI get over the cap floor. Nothing to do with a trade of players, just moving fake money around.

  • Mike

Thanks for the Cup Tim! If not for you it wouldn’t of happened!

  • Mjh528

Must feel great as an Islanders fan to hear that the reason they picked up the contract of someone who is not going to play was so the reach the MINIMUM cap floor – stay classy Islanders Management.  Makes you want to run out and buy Islander tickets…..

  • Redsox196775

does that mean we have the $5 mill to spend now?

  • Fab4ever

With all due respect, he’s 38…he will NEVER EVER be “that guy” again….he did his job, he made his point. The B’s did what they needed to do and got something…end of story.

How long will it take for him to get the message in his bunker?

  • Fab4ever

It had nothing to do with him speaking his mind…it had everything to do with him walking away from his deal this year. This was a wise move…at least they get something…he’ll never be what he was….never again. He pi ss ed that away

  • Ckelley1

    Prorated

  • Xander Bogaerts

One of the most selfish athletes of his time. Sign’s a front loaded contract & bails on the team in the year his NTC expires and the year he was to receive his lowest actual salary. Good riddence to that jackass. Tim Thomas was always about Tim Thomas. Just ask his former teammates. Stories about this guys selfishness will come out.

  • dr.pill

Amazing how much hate gets laid on Thomas. I’m sure all of you are perfect in life.

He was the key to the cup as the PP would have never got you there.. Time for Rask to shine as he was in the twilight. Cups do not come easy.

If he plays a game then you know it was something else.

  • Guest

it wasnt that he spoke his mind..it was how he embarrassed his team by acting like a db

  • NYCBruinsFan

Thanks for the memories Tim, but don’t poke the Bear or Peter Chiarelli. B’s are in first place in the Eastern Conference and are 7-1-1. Go Tuukka. My hopes are he gets a nice contract next year

One of the strangest endings to what was a great story.

  • BlindToTheTruth

that anti government, pro militia, right wing DB will fit perfectly in NY? NOT

wait till they move to Brooklyn, he will be adjusted !

  • Mmeagher68

I don’t think the B’s expected much from this trade. I feel they just wanted to turn the page and move on.

  • glenn88

The Bruins cleared $5 million on this year’s cap hit.   Move probably means the Bruins plan to trade for a 3rd line player and will have the cap space to make the move. No other reason to make the move.

  • Titletown1

Never realized there were so many homo lefties who follow hockey in Boston who find it more important to puke their lefty political ideology than to recognize TT for his greatness as a player.

Having said that, TT won’t play again in the NHL. Without him, there is no Cup in Boston, everyone is still hating the Jacobs family, the Bs would be languishing in popularity somewhere behind the Revolution, Claude Julien would be unemployed, and tickets to all home games would be generously available (even though they are for most home games still).

NO THOMAS, NO CUP. Just say thanks TT and let it go.

  • Bruinman86

Yeah, no kidding.  Didn’t have to end this way, but it sure has been a blessing with regards to Tuukka.

  • Sig

    Hope he plays.

  • A1bruins

you people are jerks! Tim Thomas is a BIG reason the Bruins won the Cup! how easy you forget, Bet you all loved him while the Bruins were bringing the Cup to Boston. He has his reasons (that not one of you know) for doing what hes doing, He will be fine, Rask is doing just fine and the Bruins will be just fine. So all you idiots, stay off the band wagon when the B’s go for the Cup again!

  • ScoopBurton

When push comes to shove…there is no cup without him. Lose the venom and always remember that. The sight of Bruins fans bad mouthing this guy is disgusting…flat out disgusting….Everyone of us is entitled to our beliefs and frankly his or anyone elses is none of our business. Thank you Tim for lifting a 29 year old cloud and raising our cup.

  • ScoopBurton

How selfish of him to carry his team to a cup

  • Boston_Sports

If it wasn’t for Tim Thomas there would have been NO Stanley Cup. Period. He almost single handily carried the team that season. Awesome performance. How soon fans forget. Or are they really fans. He wasn’t coming back to the Bruins. He’s a year older. The Bruins made a business decision. Tim may never play again. He’s sound financially. End of story.

  • Jason Perry

bet his bunker beats your house

  • Jason Perry

no, they are just liberals, plain and simple.

  • Geetsolboy

Enjoy being a d-bag? If you’re not a real Bruins fan, get the F out of here.

  • jimromeisasass

thanks for all you did for us tim. unfortunate it ended this way.

  • jimromeisasass

knock it off with the political crap. that attitude signifies all that is wrong with politics right now.

  • jimromeisasass

sounds like you have some serious issues you venomous moron. you clearly are the “child left behind.”

  • Titletown1

If the throngs of limp-wristed lefties in this, the most liberal state in the Union, couldn’t “adjust” TT, what makes you think the illiterate welfare rabble in Brooklyn will?

  • Jspina1982

And the city of boston chases another MVP out of town. What a bunch of jerks who live there.

  • 1982 = 2002 for Jspina

You know absolutely nothing about sports, do you?
