Claude Julien: ‘More that’s expected’ from Tyler Seguin

Tyler Seguin

WILMINGTON — Bruins coach Claude Julien said after Thursday’s practice at Ristuccia Arena that the B’s expect more out of Tyler Seguin, who has two goals (one of which is an empty-netter) in 11 games this season.

Last season, Seguin led the Bruins with 29 goals. His production has slowed in the early going of the shortened season, with Julien saying the team is eager to see him break out of his slump.

“We know we can get more out of him, and it’s a matter of pushing him, it’s a matter of him pushing himself,” Julien said. “He’s not a poor player, but I think there’s more that’s expected of him and there’s more that I think he’ll be able to give us. He’s still a young player, and you can squish him and make it worse or you can try and help him through it and push the right buttons and certainly help him get his game back to where it should be.”

He’ll be fine. Needs to be more under control and have more of a purpose when on defense and specifically when battling. It’s not a sword fight. Then he needs one play where he executes 3 steps ahead of the expected play rather than 2 (like Nash the other night. dayum) and he’ll be off and running. Until then, I would load him up with PP time with Marchand.

He’s a poor man’s Phil Kessel..ad libbing each game with bursts of speed

  • John Pierre

needs to be at center. B’s should look for a solid 2nd line winger, move Peverly to second line with Bergie, Kelly can play wing with Seguin and mentor him as a center.  solution could even be as simple as Caron -Seguin – Kelly but would rather see the B’s pick up a player like Jagr or a veteran who can finish.

  • Yup

I don’t care what kind of system he plays, there’s no way he’s another Stamkos and probably a lot closer to Kessel.

  • Blous

caron is bruuuutal, 8 points in 25 games in Providence and hes absurdly slow but i agree they need to pick up a veteran forward who can play on the 3rd line with kelly and peverley

  • Blous

    8 points in 35 games*

  • John Pierre

Kessel is a very good offensive player but Seguin is much better defensively and a better overall player.  The kid just turned 21 so I don’t get the pressure everyone is putting on him to carry the team.  Just needs to battle a bit more and stay present around the net. Bruins brass need to stop trying to make every talented player be Cam Neely.  Seguin is not a player who will lay out people with body checks and muck in the corners.  He still needs to fill out as well. He is in great shape but still to thin for his height.  will come in time.

  • Mike

Bruins should go after a veteran scorer or pp specialist.  Jordon Caron is awful and needs to stay at Providence.

  • Rickoconnell2

    Ryder Ryder Ryder.

  • Marchmont

    Marchmont

  • Jerry York

The Bruins should sign Jeff Pellegrini.
He’s gotten himself in good shape, and deserves a call up from Providence.

We is the answer to their power play.

You obviously have no clue about hockey.

as soon as you start playing Seguin more on the pp Claude and you’ll start seeing more pts and a better pp. He didn’t even see the ice the other night on the 5-3. are u kidding me Claude. One of the few comments I like from Felger is yeah sure let’s play the high glass line on the pp. Wake up Claude and let the kid loose.
Everyone talks about how he needs to get tougher along the boards and I agree with some of that and In my opinion he has gotten better each year and this year I have noticed him alot more in the crease looking for rebounds. Like somebody else stated not every player has to be a checking brawler.

  • Jminnaert

He will be fine as a player. I wonder if there is a locker room issue with him. The rumors of Swiss and Winnepeg game have merit. I do think that claude can’t develop raw talent into superstar, and seguin might be trade bait in a few weeks. He is playing like he is afraid out there of the the physical and making mistakes. Personally, he needs to be the support and set up man. He has created more scoring chances than anyone else, but his timing is off with others.

  • Old Time Hockey

Hmm lets see if I was 20 years old and a millionaire and living in Sweden would I go out and have a few beers and have a good time. I did that and I’m not close to a millionaire or Sweden. give the kid a break.

  • 68joesplumbing

You don’t make a race horse into a plow horse julien wants all his players to be muckers and grinders. Not gonna happen why has’nt anybody complained about Kelley only having two points and he’s not as good on face offs his play I’d not as good as in the past

  • John R

Seguin seems to be playing soft. I hate to say it but he does look a little like kessel right now. He shies away from contact at all times. If he was more aggressive and a threat to play the body sometimes I think he would be a much better player. Like Bergeron…not a physical force but not afraid to go in the dirty areas to get the puck.

  • glenn88

John, don’t compare him to Kessel.  Kessel actually scored

  • Geetsolboy

The kid is quick and talented, he’s not built to be a grinder. He should be a center, picking up the breakout pass from the boards. Then he could take advantage of his speed and puck handing skills through the neutral zone. Give him a fair chance to get the scoring touch back.

  • Lkl49

I see some people comparing Seguin to Kessel – what a joke! He’s worth two Kessels and much better defensively. Sequin’s only 20 and still getting his game together. He’ll be a great power winger, in the same category as Nash.

  • Hubie

Yes Ryder, Ryder, Ryder !!!!!! ?????

  • Wvincar

You need to fire the coach. Don;t call out your franchise player. Only Americans do that.

  • Mr C

He needs to be paired up with a fast player like a Patrick Kane that he played with in Europe.
He should also move to his natural center position, and build a line around him that will make be the player he is capable of becoming. Maybe this years draft has that sort of player

  • Mshll65

Certainly looked like Tyler needed a kick in the butt tonight. Maybe he needs some time with Kelly and Bourque.
