Sidney Crosby: ‘I thought we deserved better’

At least the chances were there for Sidney Crosby [1] and the Penguins [2] in Game 3 Wednesday night.

And in the mind of the superstar, that’s a starting point for trying to get back in an Eastern Conference final series they trail 3-0 heading into Game 4 Friday night at TD Garden.

“Unfortunately, we’€™re kind of comparing Game 2, and we didn’€™t give ourselves a chance, so we can’€™t get that one back,” Crosby said. “We gave that one to them so-to-speak. We did a lot better job tonight, but that doesn’€™t guarantee anything. We do a lot of these same things, and I think we all trust and believe we can get this back to Pittsburgh.

“I think we responded pretty well. Unfortunately, that Game 2 nobody really liked the way that turned out, and what happened there. I thought we responded well and did everything we could have besides get that last one.”

Crosby had three of Pittsburgh’s 54 shots on the night and was a plus-1 for the night. He best scoring chance might have been a shot when he wasn’t even facing the net.

Late in the first period, and with the Penguins [2] down, 1-0, Crosby was spun around in front of Tuukka Rask [3] and flipped a backhander on goal. The shot rang off the post as Rask was caught slightly out of position.

“I didn’€™t’€™ really know where the net was, but I heard it hit the post,” Crosby said. “Obviously it was kind of a scrambled play but it would have been nice for it to go in.”

Evgeni Malkin had 10 shots on goal but he and Crosby are still scoreless in the series through three games.

“I think if we play the same way we’€™re going to get our chances,” Crosby said. “I thought we generated more scoring chances than them, and I thought we deserved better.

“I think the whole game we felt really comfortable with our play. I think we felt like it was just a matter of time before we were going to get it. Unfortunately they didn’€™t, and hung around, and got the one at the end.”

The Bruins appeared on the ropes in the third period when they were outshot 14-4 and the Penguins were spending most of the time in the Boston end for the final five minutes.

Crosby was asked after the loss if frustration is building for he and his teammates.

“That’€™s the playoffs,” Crosby said. “That’€™s how it works sometimes. Unfortunately, tonight I thought we deserved better, but they found a way to get that big one in overtime. We did a lot of good things.”

Perhaps the most frustrating thing for Crosby and the Penguins is the fact they were given six power plays and the league’s top-scoring team couldn’t find a way to score on one of them.

“Goaltending really,” Crosby said, tipping his hat to Tuukka Rask [3]. “I think we’€™re getting some good chances; we hit a couple of posts. I feel like if we go out there, and both team’€™s power plays probably slipped a little bit in overtime. Guys are more tired, penalty kill gets more aggressive, and the puck is bouncing more. Those are big ones you want to put in, but I think both power plays probably weren’€™t clicking on all cylinders there, but I think the goalie made some saves, and we generated some good chances.

“We did a lot of good things. Some big kills; our power play didn’€™t score but it did generate some good chances. We just weren’€™t able to get that second one, the one to win it.

“We stick with it. We can’€™t get three wins with one game. We have to find a way to get back there and get back to that same level we had tonight, and hopefully capitalize on our chances. But I don’€™t think there’€™s too much we would change going into Game Four. If we can play the same game, and put those pucks in the net, then we can give ourselves a chance.”

Crosby said his teammates still believe, even down three games.

“You just have to trust your game and know that when you absolutely need it the most, everyone is going to show up and bring it, and kind of let everything happen,” Crosby said. “But I thought again we did a lot of good things and probably deserved better.”
