The Bruins learned Saturday night that life without their top two defensemen isn’t easy, as they suffered a 4-3 loss to the Senators Saturday night in Ottawa. The Senators survived a 6-on-4 late in the game to escape with the win.

Though the Bruins came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the game third period, Bobby Ryan made it 4-3 when he took the puck from Torey Krug at the blue line and beat Chad Johnson [2] on a breakaway. Johnson was in the game of relief of Tuukka Rask [3], who was pulled early in the second period.

David Warsofsky had tied the game in the third period with his first career NHL [4] goal, which came off a beautiful beautiful rush through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone before he held up at the right circle and blasted a slap shot past Craig Anderson.

The Senators opened the game’s scoring with a goal from Patrick Wiercioch, and though Daniel Paille [5] tied it with a breakaway goal, Ottawa re-took the lead on a funny goal from Cory Conacher that saw the Senators forward tip a fluttering puck past Rask.

Zack Smith made it 3-1 and ended Rask’s night with a shorthanded goal, but Jarome Iginla was able to bring the B’s within one by going to the net and beating Anderson off a feed from Milan Lucic [6]. Following Warsosfky’s goal, the B’s thought they had taken the lead on Iginla’s second of the night, but replays show that he had kicked the puck into the net.

The Bruins were playing without Dennis Seidenberg [7], who is out for the season with a torn ACL/MCL, and Zdeno Chara [8], who is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

The Bruins will return to action Tuesday when they host the Islanders at TD Garden.

WHAT WENT WRONG FOR THE BRUINS

- Krug had a really rough night, getting stripped on the game-winning goal as part of a minus-3 showing. He also has just two goals in his last 24 games.

- Zack Smith’s shorthanded goal was the fourth the Bruins have allowed this season. Though their power-play didn’t score, Iginla’s goal came just seconds after Anderson’s penalty expired, so special teams were essentially a wash for the B’s on Saturday.

- The B’s had a couple of injury scares to the likes of David Krejci [9] and Adam McQuaid, but both stayed in the game. Krejci missed a little time after leaving the bench in the first period, while McQuaid went down the tunnel after blocking a shot in the third.

- Brad Marchand [10] took a pair of stick penalties, as he went off for slashing Chris Neil 11 seconds into the game and was penalized in the third period for hooking Kyle Turris.

WHAT WENT RIGHT FOR THE BRUINS

- Though his future with the Bruins looked murky when the B’s called up Niklas Svedberg Friday, Johnson played well in relief of Rask Saturday. His biggest save came on Clarke MacArthur in the final minute of the second period. You can’t expect him to stop Bobby Ryan on a breakaway, and he didn’t.

- Iginla now has four goals (two of which came on the power play) in the last three games and is now up to 12 goals on the season. That ties him with Lucic for second on the Bruins, as Reilly Smith leads the team with 14.

- It’s a good thing Erik Karlsson isn’t a very good defenseman. Though supremely talented offensively, his defensive deficiencies showed when Paille squeezed past him along the wall to get around him and score a breakaway goal in the first period. When Anderson took a tripping penalty in the second period, the Senators had Karlsson serve the penalty.

Karlsson nearly caused another Bruins goal in the third period when he intercepted a pass from Paille in front of the Senators goal, but it went off his stick and just wide of the goal.
