The Bruins concluded their regular season schedule Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Devils in New Jersey. They finished with an NHL-best 54-19-9 record for 117 points, which earned them the Presidents’ Trophy.

The B’s went with a very different lineup in the game, as Patrice Bergeron, Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly, Zdeno Chara, David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Jarome Iginla did not travel to New Jersey. In the lineup were Alexander Khokhlachev, Craig Cunningham, Justin Florek and Matt Lindblad at forward, as well as Andrej Meszaros and Corey Potter on defense. Dougie Hamilton and Potter both saw time at forward, as the team dressed seven skaters. Chad Johnson was in goal for the B’s.

Following the game, the Bruins returned Khokhlachev, Cunningham, Florek and Lindblad to Providence.

Paille’s absence was the most notable given that he left Saturday’s game with what appeared to be a head injury, but Claude Julien told reporters that Paille is feeling “much better” and is considered day-to-day.

Loui Eriksson and Brad Marchand scored Boston’s goals, with the Devils getting a pair of goals from Marek Zidlicky and one from Travis Zajac. Marchand scored with 16 seconds left, making him perhaps the final player to score against Martin Brodeur in the future Hall of Famer’s Devils career.

Boston’s first-round playoff series is expected to begin Friday at TD Garden, as Red Wings coach Mike Babcock told reporters that the teams will play Friday and Sunday in Boston.
