Red Wings hire former Bruins assistant coach Doug Houda

There was some fear that if the Bruins fired their head coach, he might end up in the Atlantic Division coaching against them.

Instead, it was assistant coach Doug Houda who was canned, and guess what? Same outcome.

The Red Wings announced Tuesday that they had hired Houda as an assistant coach to replace the departed Tony Granato. Houda, a former NHL defenseman who was teammates with Zdeno Chara with the Islanders, joined the Bruins as an assistant coach in 2006 under Dave Lewis and stayed on from the hiring of Claude Julien until Houda’s dismissal last month.

The Bruins have not made a formal announcement on the futures of assistant coaches Doug Jarvis and Joe Sacco, neither of whom have contracts.
